What these tools do and who needs them
These tools work with sound, in four ways: reading text aloud in a human-sounding voice (ElevenLabs, Murf AI, Speechify); generating a whole song from a short description (Suno, Udio, AirMusic); recording meetings and turning them into transcripts and summaries (Otter.ai, Fireflies.ai, Krisp); and dictation that replaces typing (Wispr Flow). Podcasters, video creators who need voice-over, office workers with back-to-back calls, and anyone adding background music to short videos will use this category.
Three common free-tier traps
1. Free songs cannot be used commercially, and may not even be yours. This is the biggest trap in music generation. Suno’s page states no commercial use on the free plan, and its help centre says copyright in free-plan songs belongs to Suno; AirMusic keeps free songs in the cloud for only 7 days and bars commercial use. To put a track in a published video or sell it, you need a paid plan.
2. Credits are daily and vanish at midnight. Suno resets 50 credits a day and states they do not roll over; Udio gives 10 a day plus 100 a month, none accumulating. Saving up is pointless, and you cannot batch a week’s work into one day.
3. You can make it, but you may not be able to download or import. Murf AI’s free plan gives 10 minutes of generation but no download; Otter.ai free allows 300 minutes a month, 30 minutes per meeting, and only 3 audio-file imports for the lifetime of the account. Output you cannot take away is just a preview.
How to choose: three plain rules
- Check the licence before the voice quality. Anything broadcast or monetised usually needs a paid plan, so compare the cheapest paid tier directly.
- For meeting tools, check per-meeting length and how storage works. Free plans often cap a meeting at 30 minutes, or count storage as a team-wide total (Fireflies.ai’s free 400 minutes of storage is per team and never resets; you delete old meetings to make room).
- Read the unit: characters, minutes or credits. ElevenLabs free is 10,000 credits a month, roughly 10,000 characters of speech; Wispr Flow free is 2,000 words a week on desktop. Different units cannot be compared as bigger or smaller.
