What these tools do and who needs them
AI video tools do three jobs. Text-to-video generators make a few seconds of footage from a description (Runway, Kling, Pika, Veo). Digital presenters read your script on camera so you do not have to (HeyGen, Synthesia). Editing assistants add subtitles, remove backgrounds and cut an hour-long recording into short clips (CapCut AI, VEED, Descript, OpusClip). Short-form creators, small companies making tutorials or product videos, and people who want to present without showing their face all end up here.
Three common free-tier traps
1. Almost every free plan watermarks the output. This is the most watermark-heavy category on the site. Vendors that state a watermark on free exports include HeyGen, Synthesia, VEED, OpusClip, Fliki, InVideo AI and Anijam; Velo shares links without a watermark but downloads carry one by default. The exception is Pika, whose free plan lists watermark-free downloads and commercial use, but only at 480p.
2. Resolution caps are lower than you expect. VEED free exports top out at 720p and 10 minutes per video; Descript free exports are 720p; Pika free is 480p; Fliki free is 720p. Fine for phones, not for a big screen.
3. Free credits can be one-time, and clips can expire. Runway’s free plan is a one-time 125 credits that never refill; Descript’s 100 AI credits are also one-time. OpusClip free clips can no longer be exported after 3 days. HeyGen free is 3 videos a month at 1 minute each and Synthesia is 10 minutes a month, so longer projects hit the wall quickly.
How to choose: three plain rules
- Decide whether a watermark is acceptable. For internal or personal viewing, free is fine; for public publishing, most free plans here will not do, so go straight to the cheapest paid plan.
- Match the tool to your video length. Under one minute, per-video or per-second free allowances hold up; for 10-minute tutorials, look for tools billed by minutes and compare paid prices directly.
- For credit plans, check the refill cycle. Here 14 tools are subscriptions, 6 credit-based and 1 usage-based; find out whether credits refill monthly, daily or never (Runway: never).
