What these tools do and who needs them

AI writing tools either produce text for you or improve text you already wrote: social posts, product descriptions, blog articles, a smoother English email, or a translation. This category includes copy generators (Rytr, Copy.ai, Jasper AI, Writesonic), rewriting and proofreading tools (QuillBot, Grammarly), translation (DeepL), a note app’s built-in assistant (Notion AI) and Surfer SEO for content teams. People who write English emails all day, solo creators and one-person businesses are the main users.

Three common free-tier traps

1. This category has the lowest share of free tiers on the site. Only 5 of 9 tools have one. Copy.ai’s old “2,000 free words a month” plan has disappeared from its pricing page; the cheapest option is now US$29 a month. Jasper AI and Writesonic offer a 7-day trial or refund guarantee, not a permanent free plan, and Surfer SEO has no free tier. When you see “free trial”, check for an expiry date.

2. The unit is characters, not words, and it runs out fast. Rytr’s free plan gives 10,000 characters a month, roughly 1,500 to 1,800 English words; two or three long posts use it up. DeepL free allows 50,000 characters and 1 document translation a month.

3. Limits hide in “per request”, not “per month”. QuillBot free rewrites at most 125 words at a time in 2 modes; Grammarly free gives 100 AI generations a month; Notion AI free offers only a trial allowance of AI questions. Long documents must be pasted in pieces, or the upgrade prompt appears quickly.

How to choose: three plain rules

Are you generating from scratch or polishing a draft? Free tiers for polishing usually go further; generating from scratch almost always ends up paid.
Count your real monthly volume. Add up last month’s writing and compare it with the free character allowance on the tool page; if you exceed it, compare the cheapest paid plan instead.
Annual price is not monthly price. All 9 tools here are subscriptions and our tool pages record the month-to-month list price; vendors often put the annual-equivalent figure in the most visible spot, so switch the pricing page back to “monthly” before paying.
