Recommended Tools By Free Plan Feasibility

How far free goes

First, the best-known tool here, Midjourney, has no free plan (trial removed; Basic starts at US$10/month). Free routes fall into three kinds.

Refilling quotas. Leonardo gives 150 fast tokens a day (expire in 24 hours, no rollover, one job at a time). Ideogram gives 10 slow credits a week (queued, one image at a time, images are public). Recraft gives 3 generations per style per day (personal use only, not commercial, images public).

Quotas bundled in other products. Gemini’s free tier includes a small Nano Banana allowance (the number of images is not published). Canva’s free plan includes 200 Standard AI actions or 20 Premium AI actions and is the easiest start for non-designers. Adobe Firefly now says “daily free generations” without a number, and partner models cost extra credits.

Truly unlimited. Self-hosted Stable Diffusion (community licence allows commercial use under US$1M annual revenue). You need a capable GPU and your own setup, and it is the only free route where images are private.

When to pay

  • You need commercial use and privacy. Recraft Free is non-commercial, Ideogram and Recraft free images are public, and Leonardo’s terms keep rights over your images. Paid options: Midjourney Basic US$10/month, Leonardo Essential US$12/month, Ideogram Plus US$20/month, Adobe Firefly Standard US$9.99/month.
  • You need consistent style control: Midjourney is our benchmark for quality; Nano Banana is strongest at character consistency and editing.
  • If you only use it occasionally, skip subscriptions: Replicate has no free quota but bills per second (about US$2.5 per 100 FLUX Dev images in our notes).

Common pitfalls

  1. Free-tier images are public on Ideogram and Recraft, so do not use them for unreleased or client work.
  2. “Daily” quotas do not roll over: Leonardo’s 150 tokens expire in 24 hours; Ideogram’s 10 credits are weekly.
  3. Partner models in Adobe Firefly deduct an extra 10 to 40 credits per generation from the same pool.

Quick answers

Can I use free AI images commercially? Often no: check each tool’s terms; Recraft Free explicitly forbids it.

Which free option suits a beginner? Canva’s free plan, with a full interface and no GPU needed.

Each tool page lists current limits and the date we last checked them; see the image category page.

The screen quality and style control are industry benchmarks, but there is no free plan, starting at US$10/month
