This guide is for a beginner who wants to start a newsletter on beehiiv without paying. I’ll show what to set up first, what the free plan does, and the points where you’ll hit a wall. I’m not covering every setting. I’m covering the ones that decide whether free is enough for you.

beehiiv is a newsletter platform for creators. It sends your emails, hosts a web version of your posts, and has built-in AI tools for writing, translation and layout. Prices vary by country, and we checked from Taiwan.

What the free plan gives you

The free plan allows up to 2,500 subscribers. On it you get:

  • Newsletter sending
  • A standalone website for your publication
  • Podcast publishing

That’s enough to run a real publication. The limits are on the business side. The free plan has no custom domain, no automations, and no built-in ad monetization.

Here is what those three terms mean:

  • Custom domain: your own web address, such as yourname.com, instead of a beehiiv address.
  • Automations: emails that send themselves when something happens, such as a welcome message when someone signs up.
  • Built-in ad monetization: beehiiv’s own system for placing ads in your newsletter and getting paid for them.

Your first week: a simple setup path

Follow this order. It keeps you from building things you can’t use on free.

  1. Create your account and your publication. Pick a name you won’t want to change. Your site and your emails both carry it.
  2. Write one welcome post by hand. Automations are paid, so you’ll send this yourself. Keep it short: who you are, what readers get, how often.
  3. Set up the standalone website. It’s included on free. Treat it as your public archive and sign-up page.
  4. Try the AI tools on a draft. beehiiv lists AI writing, translation and layout help. The data we hold does not say which of those tools the free plan includes. It only says Pro has the “full advanced AI suite.” Open them and see what you can use.
  5. Add podcast publishing only if you have audio. It’s included on free. Skip it otherwise.
  6. Publish on a schedule. Without automations, a regular send day does the work a welcome sequence would.

Common blockers and fixes

“I can’t use my own domain.” That’s a free-plan limit. The fix is to pay, or to accept the default address for now. If you’re just testing an idea, the default is fine. If you already have a brand, decide before you build an audience around the address.

“I want a welcome email that sends itself.” Automations start on Lite. On free, send a manual welcome and pin the same message on your site.

“I want to earn from ads or paid subscriptions.” Both sit behind a paid plan. Lite unlocks paid subscriptions with 0% commission, meaning beehiiv takes no cut of what your readers pay you. Lite also opens the ad network and automations.

“I don’t want beehiiv branding on my emails.” Removing the official beehiiv logo is listed under Pro, not Lite.

“I’m close to the subscriber cap.” The free plan stops at 2,500 subscribers. We did not verify what happens when you reach it, such as whether sign-ups pause. Check the pricing page before a big promotion.

LiteUS$59/monthUS$49/monthup to 100,000
ProUS$109/monthUS$95/monthup to 250,000

Prices rise as your subscriber tier rises. The numbers above are for the entry tier. The data we hold gives no tier prices beyond that, and no yearly lump sum. Look at the pricing page for your own list size.

Pro also allows up to 10 publications and 10 team members. It removes beehiiv branding and includes the full advanced AI suite.

🔍 AMPM exclusive check

We read the official site and pricing page on 2026-10-29. Nothing differed from the official page this time. Every number in this article matches it.

Our automated checks matched the live page on each of the five days from 2026-10-25 to 2026-10-29. Our last health check was 2026-10-30.

Two limits on this check. beehiiv is a new entry in our database, and its data has had one round of review, not the three-way manual cross-check we give established tools. We read the pages. We did not open an account and test the free plan ourselves.

Two things the page does not settle for us. First, which AI tools are available on free. Second, what happens at the 2,500 cap. Treat both as open questions and confirm them on the vendor’s page.

Is free enough? For a first newsletter, yes. The free plan covers up to 2,500 subscribers, sending, a website and podcast publishing. Most new writers will take a long time to fill that list. Until you get near the cap, you pay nothing and lose very little.

What you do lose is automation and money tools. No automations means you do the welcome work by hand. No ad network and no paid subscriptions means the free plan is for building an audience, not earning from one.

Is paying worth it? Only when the paid features earn their keep. Lite costs US$59/month on monthly billing for up to 1,000 subscribers. Annual billing averages US$49/month. That’s a gap of US$10 each month. We can’t tell you the yearly lump sum because the data doesn’t give one.

My rule: pay for Lite when you have a clear plan to sell paid subscriptions or run ads. With 0% commission, beehiiv takes none of your subscription income. You still owe the monthly fee, so make sure income can cover it.

Pro at US$109/month (US$95/month on annual billing) is for teams. Ten publications and ten team members are overkill for a solo writer.

Start free. Upgrade when a specific feature blocks specific income.

🌙 PIMI, the performance-minded cat

PIMI, the performance-minded cat

Does it do the job? On the free plan, the core job is done. You write, you send, readers get the email, and your site is live. You can also publish a podcast. That’s a full publishing loop.

The weak spot is workflow. Without automations, every repeat task is manual. If you grow toward 2,500 subscribers, hand-sending welcome emails stops being practical. Lite at US$59/month unlocks automations, so that’s the upgrade that saves you time.

The custom domain is the other performance gap. Free means no custom domain. If you want your site to look like your own brand, free won’t do it. For a serious publication that matters from day one.

On the AI tools, I can’t rate speed or quality. We haven’t tested them, and the data doesn’t say which plan gets which tool. It does say Pro includes the full advanced AI suite, so if AI drafting is your main reason to switch, check what free already gives you before paying US$109/month.

Capacity is not a problem. Lite scales to 100,000 subscribers and Pro to 250,000. You won’t outgrow the platform before you outgrow the plan.

Verdict: who should use it, who should skip it

Use the free plan if you’re starting a newsletter, you’re under 2,500 subscribers, and you can live without a custom domain and automations. It costs nothing to find out whether you’ll keep writing.

Move to Lite if you want paid subscriptions, ads, automations, or a bigger list. It’s US$59/month on monthly billing, or US$49/month averaged on annual billing, at the entry tier.

Look at Pro if you run several publications, need a team, or want your own branding with no beehiiv logo. It’s US$109/month on monthly billing, or US$95/month on annual billing, at the entry tier.

Skip it for now if your plan depends on a custom domain from day one but you don’t want to pay. The free plan won’t give you that.

Before you commit, read the pricing page for the cap behavior and for AI access on free.

🐾 Meet the cats: AMO and PIMI

AMO

AMPM is a Taiwan-based AI-tool pricing watchdog. Our motto: ask before you subscribe. Two cats argue every tool from two sides:

  • ☀️ AMO — the budget-minded cat. Always asks: is the free tier enough, and is paying actually worth it?
  • 🌙 PIMI — the performance-minded cat. Cares about whether it works well, fast, and gets your job done.
PIMI

When they are done arguing, you know whether to pay. Every number is checked by us, with the verification date at the end.
