Civitai is the largest open-source hub for AI image models — a place to download other people’s models and run image generation in your browser. The good news for a first-timer: you can download models and make an image without entering a card. The confusing part is Buzz, the site’s internal currency, and the way the paid plans advertise a “bonus” that does not do what most people assume. This guide gets you to your first finished image on the free tier, then shows exactly when paying starts to make sense — and where the Gold plan’s headline “+20%” quietly does less than it looks.
All prices here are in US dollars as shown on the pricing page; they can vary by country, and we checked from Taiwan.
Start free: what the no-cost tier actually gives you
Three things come at no cost, and they are enough to learn the whole workflow.

Illustration: Downloading models to run locally is free (left), but generating them in the cloud consumes heavily (right).
First, downloads are free. Every community model and LoRA on the site can be downloaded without paying. A model is the base image generator; a LoRA is a small add-on file that nudges that base toward a specific style, character, or look. You can pull as many as you want and run them on your own computer if you have a capable graphics card.
Second, new accounts get 100 Buzz. Buzz is the credit you spend to generate images on Civitai’s own servers — the “cloud generator” — instead of your own machine. One hundred Buzz is a starter balance to try that cloud generation a few times.
Third, daily logins give you a small amount of Blue Buzz. This is where the color coding matters, and the site does not explain it loudly. There are two kinds of Buzz. Blue Buzz is earned for free — the daily login top-up lands here — and it can be spent on generation but cannot be bought or cashed out. Green Buzz is the kind you buy or receive from a paid subscription. For a beginner the practical takeaway is simple: log in each day, let the free Blue Buzz accumulate, and spend it on the generator while you learn.
The free tier is enough to answer the only question that matters at the start — do the models and the generator do what you want — before any money is involved.

Your first image, step by step
Here is the shortest path from a cold account to a finished picture.
- Create an account at civitai.com and confirm your email. Your 100 Buzz is credited to the account.
- Open the on-site generator rather than downloading anything. This runs on Civitai’s servers and spends Buzz, so you skip the hardware question entirely for now.
- Pick a base model from the model picker. Start with a popular, highly-rated general model; you can swap later.
- Write a prompt — a plain description of what you want to see. Keep the first one short so you can tell what the model is doing.
- Add a LoRA only if you need a specific style. Skip it for your very first run; one variable at a time is easier to read.
- Generate. The job goes into a queue — cloud generation runs in a line, and you wait your turn — then your image appears and a small amount of Buzz is deducted.
Common blockers, and the fixes:
- “I ran out of Buzz.” The 100-Buzz starter balance goes quickly if you generate large batches at high settings. Drop to a single image per run and modest resolution, and lean on the daily Blue Buzz while learning. Nothing here requires a subscription.
- “The model won’t load on my PC.” That is the local route, which depends on your own GPU and VRAM. If your card can’t handle it, stay on the on-site generator — that is the whole point of Buzz-based cloud generation.
- “My queue is slow.” On the free tier you take standard queue position. This is the first thing a paid plan changes, which brings us to the plans.
When the paid tiers make sense (and the +20% caveat)
Civitai sells three monthly memberships. There is no annual price in the data we verified, so treat every figure below as a monthly charge.
- Bronze — US$10/month. 10,000 Green Buzz each month, a 5% bonus on purchased Buzz, queue priority, and up to 8 image jobs queued at once.
- Silver — US$25/month. 25,000 Green Buzz each month, a 10% bonus on purchased Buzz, premium customer support, and up to 10 jobs queued at once.
- Gold — US$50/month. 50,000 Green Buzz each month, a 20% bonus on purchased Buzz, VIP support, and up to 12 images generated in a single job.
The monthly Green Buzz is the real reason to subscribe: a predictable allowance, plus priority so your jobs jump ahead of the free crowd, plus the ability to line up more jobs at once. “Concurrent queued jobs” is just how many generations you can have waiting in line simultaneously — handy if you batch work.
Now the caveat the plan lines blur. Each tier advertises a bonus percentage — 5%, 10%, and Gold’s eye-catching 20%. Read carefully: that bonus is a rebate on Buzz you buy on top of the plan, not extra on the monthly allowance. Gold’s “+20%” does not turn 50,000 Green Buzz into 60,000. It means that if you separately purchase additional Buzz, you get 20% more of that purchase. If you never buy extra Buzz, the bonus is worth nothing to you. So Gold earns its US$50 through the larger 50,000 allowance, the 12-image single jobs, and VIP support — not through a bigger base balance. Anyone subscribing because “20% more” sounded like a fuller monthly tank has misread the offer.

Two things the vendor page does not spell out clearly, and one honesty note.
The bonus is on purchases, not the allowance. The pricing page lists each plan’s Buzz bonus (5%, 10%, 20%) on the same line as the monthly Green Buzz, which reads as if the bonus inflates the allowance. It does not. We read it as a rebate that only applies when you buy additional Buzz — meaning the headline “+20%” on Gold is worthless to a subscriber who never tops up. If you only use the included monthly Buzz, ignore the bonus percentages entirely when comparing tiers.
Blue Buzz and Green Buzz are not the same thing. The free daily top-up is Blue Buzz (earned, non-purchasable); subscriptions and purchases give Green Buzz. Both spend on generation, but the distinction matters if you ever expect to withdraw or transfer value — the free-earned kind doesn’t behave like the paid kind. The plan descriptions name “Green Buzz” without explaining the contrast, so a new user won’t know why their free balance looks different.
Honesty note on confidence. Civitai entered our tracker as an automatic challenger candidate, and this data has had one verification round, not our usual triple cross-check. The numbers above match what the official site and pricing page showed on 2026-10-24, and a third-party listing (Product Hunt) corroborates the product, but free-tier quotas and any commercial-use terms can change — confirm against the live pricing page before you subscribe. Nothing differed from the official figures this round; our only real addition is the two plain-English clarifications above.
Verdict: who should use it, who should skip it
Use the free tier if you are learning, you want to test models before trusting your own hardware, or you generate occasionally. The free downloads plus 100 starter Buzz plus daily Blue Buzz cover the full learning curve, and you may never need more.
Pay for Bronze (US$10) if the free queue is your main frustration and you generate regularly — the queue priority and 10,000 monthly Green Buzz remove the two things that slow a free user down, for the least money.
Pay for Silver (US$25) if your monthly volume outgrows 10,000 Buzz and you want faster support without jumping to the top tier.
Pay for Gold (US$50) if you need the 50,000 monthly allowance or specifically want up to 12 images per single job for batch work — but only if those features justify it on their own. Do not pick Gold for the “20% bonus.” That bonus only pays off when you buy extra Buzz on top of the plan, and if that is your real need, price out the top-ups directly rather than assuming the membership covers them.
Skip paying entirely if you have a capable GPU and are happy running downloaded models locally — the thing you pay Buzz for is Civitai’s servers, and your own hardware does that for free.

AMPM is a Taiwan-based AI-tool pricing watchdog. Our motto: ask before you subscribe. Two cats argue every tool from two sides:
- ☀️ AMO — the budget-minded cat. Always asks: is the free tier enough, and is paying actually worth it?
- 🌙 PIMI — the performance-minded cat. Cares about whether it works well, fast, and gets your job done.
When they are done arguing, you know whether to pay. Every number is checked by us, with the verification date at the end.
