Opening

Comet is Perplexity’s Chromium-based AI browser that combines search with automated task handling. Page summaries, Deep Research, and voice mode are unlimited and free. Agent tasks—the browser auto-filling forms, booking reservations, or drafting emails—run on monthly quotas. Perplexity doesn’t publish the reset schedule or the free quota size.

Core free tier: unlimited summaries, no quota

The free tier includes the full Chromium browser (no watermark, no file handling quirks), page summarization, voice mode, shopping assistant, and Deep Research. All free, all unlimited. No usage tracking, no nag screens. You only need a Perplexity account login.

Agent tasks are different. Form auto-fills, booking automation, and email drafting consume a monthly allowance. The official Comet page says the free allowance is “limited” but names no number and gives no reset date. That’s the gap between what Perplexity shows and what matters.

Three paid plans stack quota and features

Comet Plus: US$5/month. Boosts agent task quota to around 500 per month. No other feature changes. Perplexity doesn’t publish this number; we estimated it from feature descriptions. Cheapest path to more automation.

Pro: US$20/month. Quadruples quota to roughly 2,000 agent tasks per month. Adds background agents—tasks that run on a schedule without your input—and priority processing. Most users choose this tier.

Max: US$200/month. Unlimited agent tasks. Includes priority GPU allocation, Slack integration, team management, and priority support. Built for teams embedding Comet into business workflows.

The gap from Plus to Max is 40× price for 4× quota (or infinite, if you count unlimited). Pro sits in the middle at 15× Plus’s price but only 4× the quota.

Risk: documented prompt injection weakness

Comet has a known prompt injection vulnerability. Perplexity’s own documentation and third-party reviews flag it. Don’t use Comet for banking logins, password managers, or other sensitive operations. It’s a browser, not a vault.

🔍 AMPM exclusive check

Perplexity’s official Comet page names the three paid prices (US$5, US$20, US$200/month—verified) and states free is “available globally as of October 2, 2025.” It does not disclose: free agent task quota size, monthly reset dates, or quota numbers for Pro and Max tiers. We estimated paid-tier quotas from feature descriptions; no public source spells them out. Nothing we verified differs from Perplexity’s claims. The gap is what they omit.

AMO, the budget-minded cat

☀️ AMO, the budget-minded cat

Free is the real product if you only want summaries and research. Page analysis, Deep Research, voice mode, and shopping help have no usage cap. This isn’t a limited trial—it’s the permanent free tier. Perplexity initially confined Comet to Max subscribers (US$200/month) in July 2025, then opened it to everyone free in October 2025.

Agent tasks are where you hit walls. If you never auto-fill forms, book hotels through the browser, or draft emails via Comet, paid plans are unnecessary. Weekly automation? Plus at US$5/month adds 500 tasks per month, which covers most light users. Heavier automation? Pro at US$20/month gives 2,000 tasks and background agents that run unattended.

Plus is the sharper deal: 15× the price of free buys 4× the quota, not infinite. Pro costs 4× as much as Plus but also adds background agents—the feature that transforms Comet from a tool you drive into a background worker.

The security catch: the prompt injection risk means Comet is unsafe for logins and sensitive data. Use it to synthesize competitor research, monitor prices, or automate booking confirmations. Don’t hand it your bank password. If you avoid sensitive operations, free is genuinely sufficient—no catch, no watermarks, no expiration.

PIMI, the performance-minded cat

Comet’s strength is reading multiple tabs and synthesizing across them, then running agent tasks in parallel. Free Comet handles basic synthesis and Deep Research without throttle. Voice mode works. The search integration is quick.

Agent task scaling shows the paid difference. Plus to Pro is a 4× quota jump and adds background agents that run on schedules. If you’re monitoring competitor prices, scraping availability, or sending daily reports, background agents turn Comet into unattended infrastructure. Pro at US$20/month pays for itself if it saves one hour per week of manual work.

Max (US$200/month) adds Slack integration and team management, so multiple people share the unlimited quota and track results in Slack. For a team of 3–5 automating sales leads, recruiting pipelines, or operations workflows, US$200/month for unlimited agent runs is cheaper than one part-time hire.

On raw speed: free Comet doesn’t slow summaries or searches. Paid tiers prioritize GPU access, which matters if you’re running 10+ Deep Research queries in parallel or 50+ agent tasks concurrently. Most free users never hit that wall. The paid edge is real but small—you’re buying quota and priority queue, not a fundamentally faster engine. Deep Research is already responsive on free.

Verdict: who should use it, who should skip it

Use free if: You want a clean browser for research and summaries, you rarely use agent automation, and you accept the prompt injection risk (don’t handle sensitive logins). No cost, no ceiling on what matters.

Pay Plus (US$5/month) if: You run 10–50 agent tasks monthly. Auto-fill a few forms, send a batch of emails, book a few reservations. Cheapest guarantee you won’t exhaust free quota.

Pay Pro (US$20/month) if: Weekly automation is routine, you want background agents to run unattended, or you expect 50+ agent tasks monthly. This is where paying beats free by a wide margin. It’s the most-chosen tier for good reason.

Pay Max (US$200/month) if: You’re a team (3+ people) using Comet as core automation infrastructure for sales, recruiting, or operations. Unlimited agents and Slack integration make it a shared platform, not a personal tool.

Skip Comet entirely if you need it with banking logins, passwords, or credit card entry. The prompt injection risk is documented and serious. Use it for research, shopping, and general workflow automation instead.

AMO and PIMI

AMPM is a Taiwan-based AI-tool pricing watchdog. Our motto: ask before you subscribe. Two cats argue every tool from two sides:

  • ☀️ AMO — the budget-minded cat. Always asks: is the free tier enough, and is paying actually worth it?
  • 🌙 PIMI — the performance-minded cat. Cares about whether it works well, fast, and gets your job done.

When they are done arguing, you know whether to pay. Every number is checked by us, with the verification date at the end.
