DeepL’s free tier is still alive in 2026, and it still hands you 50,000 characters of text translation every month, plus one document translation per month. That’s the headline most “is DeepL’s free plan dead” searches are chasing right now, and the direct answer is no — it isn’t dead on the web app. But the free tier comes with limits that bite harder than the number suggests, and the API (the way developers plug DeepL’s translation into their own apps or websites) tells a different, worse story for anyone building software rather than typing text into a browser.

AMPM checked the official pricing page, cross-referenced two sets of numbers that had been contradicting each other, and is laying out exactly what’s free, what costs money, and where the real friction is.

What the free tier actually covers

The free plan gives you 50,000 characters of text translation per month, reset monthly. Fifty thousand characters sounds generous until you remember that a single long report or contract can burn through a big chunk of it in one sitting. On top of the character cap, you get exactly one file translation a month, with each file capped at 5MB, and it keeps your original formatting. Traditional Chinese is fully supported — translation quality is DeepL’s main selling point, and that hasn’t changed. Commercial use is allowed on the free tier, and there’s no watermark on the output. The catch most people miss: glossary — a feature that lets you lock in your own preferred translations for specific words or phrases — is limited on the free tier, so if you need consistent terminology across a lot of text, you’ll hit that wall fast.

What paying actually buys you

Once you move to a paid plan, the character ceiling disappears for text translation, and your file-translation allowance goes up substantially, along with a bigger glossary allowance. The Individual plan runs US$10.49/month billed monthly, or US$8.74/month if you commit to annual billing. For teams, the Team plan is US$34.49/month per user billed monthly, or US$28.74/month per user billed annually — a 16% saving. For larger organizations, Business runs US$68.99/month per user billed monthly, or US$57.49/month per user billed annually. None of these plans publish an annual total price on the site — only the monthly-equivalent rate — so that’s as precise as the numbers get.

The API story is different, and it matters

If you’re a developer who wants to call DeepL from your own code rather than typing into deepl.com, the picture changed meaningfully. According to a secondhand source (not confirmed directly on DeepL’s own site), DeepL stopped selling its old API Free and API Pro plans in July 2026. New developer signups are now pointed toward API Growth, priced at US$26/month, which includes 12 million characters per year — working out to roughly 1 million characters a month — with overage billed at US$27.50 per million characters beyond that. If you were relying on a free API tier to translate text inside your own app, that door looks closed for new accounts. We’re flagging this one as unconfirmed by the vendor’s own page, because our direct check couldn’t verify it firsthand.

We ran a real-browser check on deepl.com/en/pro on 2026-08-22, geolocated to Taiwan with USD pricing displayed, and confirmed the free tier numbers above by hand rather than trusting a scraped summary. That check also resolved something that looked like a contradiction in earlier records: one source listed “Individual” at US$8.74/month, another listed a “Starter” plan at US$10.49/month, and it looked like two competing plan names for the same tier. They’re actually the same plan — US$10.49/month is the monthly-billed price, US$8.74/month is the annual-billed price, not two different products. Same pattern resolved the Team numbers: US$28.74 and US$34.49 are the annual and monthly prices of one plan, not two. We also confirmed the Business plan pricing directly against the official site for the first time — it had never been independently checked before this pass. Where we couldn’t get a firsthand read is the API side: the claim that API Free and API Pro were discontinued in July 2026, and the API Growth numbers, come from a secondhand source because DeepL’s pricing page blocked our automated check on that section. If you’re deciding based on the API pricing specifically, verify it directly with DeepL before you commit.

☀️ AMO, the budget-minded cat

AMO, the budget-minded cat

Fifty thousand free characters a month is enough for someone doing occasional translation — a few emails, short documents, social posts. It is not enough for anyone translating long documents regularly, because one file can eat most or all of that monthly allowance in a single use, and you only get one file translation per month on top of it. That’s the two-free-tiers-in-one trap: you could stay under 50,000 characters easily on text-paste translation, but hit the file-translation wall almost immediately if your real need is documents. For someone who pastes a paragraph here and there, free is genuinely enough — don’t pay. For someone translating contracts, reports, or schoolwork every week, Individual at US$10.49/month (or US$8.74/month paid annually) removes the character ceiling and raises the file-translation allowance, which is the actual bottleneck, not the text limit. I wouldn’t jump straight to Team or Business as an individual — those are priced per user per month (US$34.49 and US$68.99 respectively on monthly billing) and built for organizations, not solo use. The annual-billing discount is real and worth taking if you’re sure you’ll use DeepL for the full year, but there’s no published yearly lump-sum price anywhere in the data, so budget it as the monthly-equivalent rate, not a guessed annual total.

🌙 PIMI, the performance-minded cat

PIMI, the performance-minded cat

Translation quality is still DeepL’s reason to exist — it’s the most natural-reading machine translation most people encounter, and that holds for Traditional Chinese too, which is the detail that matters most for a Taiwan-based audience. But “it works well” and “it works well under the constraints you’ll actually hit” are different claims. The free tier’s one-file-per-month cap means it fails as a working tool the moment you need to translate more than one document in a month — not a quality failure, a quota failure. Paid plans fix that by raising the file-translation allowance and removing the text-character ceiling entirely, which is the right trade if documents are your real workload. The bigger performance story is on the developer side: anyone building a product on top of DeepL’s API lost the free entry point in July 2026 (per the secondhand source we flagged above), and the current path in is API Growth at US$26/month for 12 million characters a year, with overage at US$27.50 per million characters past that. That’s a real cost floor for any app or workflow that calls DeepL programmatically — there’s no free API tier left to prototype against, as far as we could confirm. If your use case is “translate well inside a browser,” DeepL still performs. If your use case is “wire translation into my own software for free,” that option appears gone for new signups.

Verdict: who should use it, who should skip it

Use DeepL’s free tier if you translate small amounts of text occasionally and almost never need to translate full documents — 50,000 characters a month covers that comfortably, and commercial use is allowed with no watermark. Upgrade to Individual (US$10.49/month, or US$8.74/month annually) the moment file translation is your bottleneck, since that’s the cap that actually breaks the free experience, not the character count. Skip the free tier and go straight to a paid plan if you’re a developer who needs the API — there’s reportedly no free API option left as of July 2026, and API Growth’s US$26/month for 12 million characters a year is the apparent starting cost, though we couldn’t confirm that discontinuation directly against DeepL’s own page. For teams, Team (US$34.49/month per user, or US$28.74/month annually) and Business (US$68.99/month per user, or US$57.49/month annually) are priced for organizational use, not something an individual should buy to get around the file cap.
