Fireflies Free Cannot Export Transcripts: Unlimited Recording, Zero Downloads — Is US$18 Pro Worth It? (Checked Sept 2026)

The headline on Fireflies’ free plan is unlimited transcription — record as many meetings as you like. That part is true.

Most people discover the other part at the worst moment: when they need to hand a transcript to someone else. The free plan has no download.

Here is the free-versus-paid line, read straight from the official pricing page.

1. What free actually includes

Read on 2026-09-05, the Free column lists:

• Unlimited transcription* (with an asterisk)
• Limited AI summaries — limited, not unlimited
• 400 mins of storage/team (shared across the team)
• 20 AI credits
• Zoom, Google Meet, Teams and more; 100+ languages; real-time notes; meeting search; the AskFred assistant; audio/video upload; desktop and mobile apps; Chrome extension; API access
• Video capture at 720p, recording limit 2 hours

That is a lot on paper. Two limits decide whether it works as a real tool:

1. AI summaries are “Limited”, not unlimited. The comparison table shows Limited on Free and Unlimited from Pro.

2. The 400 minutes of storage is a shared team total that does not reset monthly. When it fills, you delete old meetings to make room.

2. The real dividing line: export

The official table lists Download transcripts, summaries, recordings under Pro’s “Everything in Free, plus…” column.

So free gives unlimited transcription of material you can only read inside Fireflies.

If your workflow is “finish the call, paste the transcript into a report, email it to a client, file it in the company wiki” — free cannot do that. It is the hardest wall in the product.

3. The four plans compared

From the official pricing page (monthly / annual per month, per seat):

Things worth noticing:

• The annual discount is steep: Pro drops from US$18 to US$10 a month (the page advertises up to 44% off).
• Pro does not give you more AI credits than free (both 20). Upgrading to Pro buys export, unlimited summaries, 8,000 minutes of storage and video recording — not more AI.
• More AI credits means Business (30) or Enterprise (50).
• Multi-language mode, conversation intelligence and team analytics start at Business.

4. Honest assessment

What is good

• Unlimited transcription is real, and rare — most competitors cap free plans at a few meetings a month.
• API access on the free plan is genuinely valuable if you are willing to script around it.
• 100+ languages, real-time notes, meeting search and AskFred are all included free.
• The annual price is fair: US$10/month puts Pro at the lower-middle of the meeting-notes market.

What is not

• No export on free — the limit most likely to waste your time.
• AI summaries are “Limited” with no published cap — and we do not estimate numbers a vendor has not published.
• 400 minutes is shared and never resets, realistically a handful of long meetings.
• Monthly costs nearly double annual (US$18 vs US$10), which effectively pushes you into a yearly commitment.
• Fireflies’ own pages have described the 400 minutes as both “per team” and “per seat”; we follow the pricing page.

5. Three recommendations

• You only need searchable notes for yourself: free is fine — just delete old meetings regularly to keep the 400 minutes clear.
• You need to hand transcripts to other people: Pro is the only option. Pay monthly for one month first; do not lock twelve months to save US$8.
• Team, multi-language, or analytics: go straight to Business — Pro does not include them.
