The Price of Free Gemini: Google's Own Price List Says Free-Tier Content Is Used to Improve Its Products — Paid Tier Says It Is Not (2026)
Article last updated:2026-09-05
The free Gemini tier is one of the easiest free AI options to start with: no monthly fee, no card, and access to Google’s current generation of models.
The trade-off is not buried in the terms — it is printed on the price list. The free-tier column reads “Content used to improve our products”. The paid-tier column reads “Content not used to improve our products”. This piece explains what that means in practice, and how to decide what is safe to paste in.
1. What the free tier actually gives you
Read from the official price list on 2026-09-05, these are marked free of charge for both input and output:
- Gemini 3.8 Flash, 3.7 Flash, 3.6 Flash
- Gemini 3.5 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, 3.1 Flash-Lite
- Gemini 2.5 Pro, 2.5 Flash, 2.5 Flash-Lite
- 2.5 Flash native audio, embedding models and others
In other words, this is not an old model handed out as a sample — the current Flash generation is available on the free tier. That is what makes it genuinely useful.
2. The cost is printed on the same table
Alongside price, the free and paid tiers differ on one line about your data:
| Free tier | Paid tier | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free of charge | Priced per model |
| Your content | Used to improve Google’s products | Not used to improve Google’s products |
Read plainly: what you send on the free tier may be reviewed and used to improve the models. That is not a prediction that it will leak — but it is explicitly not a confidential channel.
3. What to paste, and what never to paste
The dividing line: if a leak of this text would leave you explaining yourself to somebody, keep it off the free tier.
Fine on the free tier:
- Summarising, translating or tidying public material — news, public documents, your own published writing.
- Practice and study material.
- Your own notes, shopping lists, trip plans — anything with no third party in it.
Not on the free tier:
- Customer lists, quotes, contracts, CVs. They contain other people’s personal data, and the responsibility for that is yours.
- Unreleased internal material — financials, product specs, source code, passwords and keys.
- Health, financial and identity data.
A quick self-test: if this text appeared online tomorrow, would I have a problem? If yes, do not use the free tier for it.
4. The only official way out is the paid tier
The rule is attached to the tier: free-tier content is used to improve the products, paid-tier content is not. To get the second sentence you have to be on the paid tier, and the way in is linking an active billing account.
The documented upgrade conditions are:
- Tier 1: set up and link an active billing account (tier cap US$250).
- Tier 2: US$100 paid, plus 3 days from the first successful payment (cap US$2,000).
- Tier 3: US$1,000 paid, plus 30 days from the first successful payment (caps from US$20,000 upwards).
The documentation also notes that moving from Free to Tier 1 usually takes effect instantly, with later upgrades landing within about 10 minutes.
Worth being clear-eyed about: attaching billing means usage starts being charged. On the current price list, Gemini 3.8 Flash is US$0.75 per million input units and US$3.75 per million output units (the page notes this holds through 2026-12-31, becoming US$1.50 and US$7.50 from 2027-01-01), while Gemini 2.5 Pro is US$1.25 input and US$10.00 output, rising to US$2.50 and US$15.00 for prompts above 200k units.
Ordinary personal usage is small, but decide deliberately rather than attaching a card for privacy reasons and forgetting what else is billed to it.
5. And the usual question: how many requests a minute does free allow?
Google no longer publishes that as a table. The rate-limit page says limits depend on factors such as your usage tier and can be viewed in Google AI Studio.
So the honest answer is: the specific numbers are in your own account, not in the public docs. The per-minute and per-day figures circulating online are mostly older data or one person’s observation — do not treat them as guarantees.
6. Three sentences
- The free tier is genuinely free and includes the current Flash models.
- The stated cost is that free-tier content is used to improve Google’s products. Keep sensitive material out.
- “Not used to improve our products” only comes with the paid tier, which means linking billing and paying by usage.

What Amo and Pimi think
Developers try out models and create prototypes: use the free quota directly, no need to think about it. Before going into production, calculate the excess fee rate carefully, as Search and Maps have different prices, don't get them mixed up.
