How to Stretch Grammarly Free's 100 AI Prompts a Month — and What Doesn't Count (2026)

The most common misconception about Grammarly’s free plan is that you stop being able to use it once the allowance runs out. You don’t. Reading the official plan comparison table on 2026-09-05, the line is clear: AI generation is capped at 100 prompts a month, but core spelling, grammar and tone detection are uncapped. Once you understand where that line sits, the free plan lasts a lot longer than most people assume.

1. What actually burns one of your 100 prompts

The official comparison splits features into two groups. These do not touch your allowance (ticked on free, no number attached):

• Spelling and grammar correction (Write without mistakes)
• Tone detection (See your writing tone) — note that this is detection, not adjustment

This is what consumes the allowance, and it is the one row on the official table with a number next to it: “Generate text with AI prompts — 100 prompts / month”. So anything where you ask the AI to produce new text — rewrite this paragraph, expand this note, draft this reply — counts as one prompt each time.

And these are not on the free plan at all (marked Unavailable — not rationed, just absent):

That table matters more than it looks. Many people assume the one-click “rewrite this sentence” button is being rationed by the 100-prompt cap. It isn’t — the button simply is not there on free. Your 100 prompts are for the path where you type an instruction and ask the AI to generate.

2. How to budget the 100

Free is 100 prompts per month (the official wording is 100 prompts / month). Pro is 2,000 per member per month, and Enterprise is listed as unlimited. A hundred works out to a little over three a day. In practice, this ordering gets the most out of it:

Step 1: exhaust the free, uncapped stuff first. Anything that is “catch my typos” or “does this read angry?” runs on the uncapped checker. Spend zero prompts there. Running a finished email through the checker usually solves most of the problem on its own.

Step 2: save prompts for genuinely blank-page work. Three situations are usually worth the spend:

1. A draft from nothing — you have one sentence of intent and need a paragraph.
2. A paragraph you’re stuck on — you want a different angle to react to.
3. A wholesale change of tone — turning a frustrated note into a professional complaint. Free has no one-click tone control, but you can describe the tone you want in the prompt itself.

Step 3: ask once, properly. This is where most of the waste happens. “Write me a leave request” → not quite right → “make it more formal” → “now shorter” burns three prompts. Ask once instead: “Write a formal leave request to my manager, under 150 words, reason is a family emergency.” Every extra round trip is another prompt. Front-loading your requirements can easily halve your usage.

Step 4: check in near month end. The allowance is monthly. If you are burning through it by mid-month, save the rest for documents that matter. If you have plenty left near the end, spend it — there is no stated rollover.

3. When it’s actually time to upgrade

The signals that free has run out of road have little to do with the counter:

• You need the one-click rewrite and tone controls. Those are Unavailable on free — waiting for a new month will not make them appear.
• You need plagiarism or AI-content detection (student work, submissions). Same story: not a quota issue.

If 100 prompts is genuinely your only constraint, Pro is 2,000 per member per month — twenty times the headroom. The official page currently offers a 7-day free trial, which is the sensible way to test the “not available on free” features against your actual work before paying.

4. Two things we noticed while checking

Recorded as observed on 2026-09-05:

1. The plans page currently shows no monthly prices. Free reads “Create account”, Pro reads “Start 7-day Free Trial”, Enterprise reads “Contact Sales” — the numbers appear further into checkout or sales flow. Our tool page carries the price figures from our own checks.
2. The page footer now reads “2026 © Superhuman Platform”, and the Enterprise plan is described as available through Superhuman Go. Grammarly’s brand ownership has evidently shifted, so plan names and bundles may change; worth keeping an eye on.
