HeyGen is among the smoothest avatar-video tools available, and its free tier is genuinely usable. But its billing has a gap most people only discover after paying:

Free counts videos. Paid counts credits. And how many videos a credit buys — HeyGen does not publish a conversion.

Here is the real picture, including what works well and what makes budgeting hard.

1. Free tier: counted in videos, easy to understand

Read from the official pricing page on 2026-09-05:

• 3 videos per month
• 1 minute maximum per video
• Up to 1080p
• Output carries a watermark

The upside is clarity: three is three, no credit maths. The downside is the watermark, which makes free a trial tier rather than a production one.

2. Paid tiers: credits, and the rate floats

Business adds US$20 per seat per month for extra seats.

The important sentence on the page: credits are HeyGen’s “single currency” across all features, and consumption “can vary based on which AI model is used, video duration, and the complexity of the generation.”

There is no official “1 credit = N seconds.” We are not going to estimate one — this site does not invent numbers a vendor has not published.

3. What that means in practice

Credit billing is not inherently bad, but it shifts budget risk onto you. Three consequences:

1. The same monthly fee buys a variable amount of work. Newer or heavier models and more complex scenes consume more, so the same 600 credits produce fewer finished videos.
