Ideogram built its name on something most AI image generators still fumble: rendering actual readable text inside a picture — posters, slogans, product labels, logos with words that don’t come out garbled. That’s the draw. The catch is in the free tier, and it’s a catch most people miss until they hit it. Ideogram’s free tier doesn’t top up every day. It gives you a fixed batch of credits once a week, and if you’re used to tools that refresh daily, you’ll run dry faster than expected. This piece breaks down exactly what free gets you, what each paid plan costs, and when upgrading actually pays off versus when it doesn’t.
What the free tier actually gives you
Ideogram’s free plan hands out 10 “slow credits” per week — not per day. That’s the whole allowance until the next weekly reset. In practice, 10 slow credits works out to roughly 40 images a week, depending on which model and mode you use, since cost per image varies.
Three things make the free tier more restrictive than the headline number suggests:
- One image at a time. Slow credits run jobs sequentially — you can’t queue up a batch and walk away. How long each job takes depends on how busy Ideogram’s servers are and how much you’ve already used that week.
- Your images are public. Anything you generate on the free tier is visible to others, not private to your account. If you’re drafting anything sensitive — client work, unreleased branding — that’s worth knowing before you start.
- Login is mandatory. You need a Google, Apple, or Microsoft account to use even the free tier. There’s no anonymous trial.
Credit cost isn’t flat across Ideogram’s five model versions. On the newest model, 4.0, Turbo mode costs 2 credits per image, Balanced costs 4, and Quality costs 6. Older models like 2a are far cheaper per image — Turbo mode on 2a costs just 0.5 credits for a batch of 4 images, meaning 1 credit can get you around 8 images if you’re not fussy about using the latest model. If you want the sharpest output, a single Quality-mode image on the newer models runs about 6 credits — more than half your entire weekly free allowance for one picture.

The three paid plans, plan by plan
Plus — US$20/month, or about US$15/month billed annually. This is the entry point once free credits aren’t enough. Plus gives you 1,000 “priority credits” a month plus unlimited slow credits, so you’re never fully cut off even after priority credits run out — you just drop back to the slower, queued generation. Plus also unlocks private image generation, unlimited character consistency (keeping the same character looking the same across images), high-resolution export, and the ability to generate 8 images at once instead of one. If you burn through your 1,000 priority credits early, you can buy 150 more for US$4. One thing Plus does not include: batch generation (running large sets of prompts automatically).
Pro — US$60/month, or about US$42/month billed annually. This is Ideogram’s top individual-user plan, with 3,500 priority credits a month — more than triple what Plus offers. If you’re producing images professionally and burning through Plus’s priority credits before the month ends, Pro is the next step up. There’s no middle tier between Plus and Pro for individuals, so the jump from US$20 to US$60 a month is the only upgrade path if 1,000 credits isn’t enough.
Team — US$30 per user per month, billed monthly; US$20 per user per month if billed annually (marked as “Save 33%” on Ideogram’s own pricing page). Each seat gets 1,500 priority credits a month. This plan is built for multiple people sharing an account structure rather than one heavy individual user — if you’ve got two or three people who’d each burn through less than 1,500 credits monthly, Team on annual billing works out cheaper per person than putting everyone on separate Plus plans.
Enterprise — custom quote, contact sales. Credit limits are negotiated, with volume discounts on API usage and access to privately customized models. There’s no published price; you have to talk to Ideogram’s sales team.
Cheapest upgrade path, and when paying isn’t worth it
If you’re on free and hitting the weekly 10-credit wall, the next logical step is Plus at US$20/month (or about US$15/month if you commit to annual billing). That’s the only step between free and Pro for an individual — there’s no US$10 tier.
Paying is probably not worth it if you only need the occasional poster or thumbnail and don’t mind public output and weekly waiting. Ten slow credits a week, stretched across cheaper older models, can realistically produce dozens of usable images a month for zero cost. Where paying stops making sense: Plus’s 1,000 monthly priority credits sound generous, but on the newest 4.0 model in Quality mode (6 credits per image), that’s under 170 images a month before you’re back to slow, queued generation or buying US$4 top-ups. If your workload is genuinely high-volume on the best model, you’ll outgrow Plus quickly and face the jump straight to US$60/month Pro — there’s no gentler step up.

🔍 AMPM exclusive check
We went to Ideogram’s own pricing page directly rather than relying on summaries or secondhand pricing trackers, and resolved two things that had been inconsistent across sources:
First, the free tier’s reset cadence. Ideogram’s marketing language around “10 credits” doesn’t make it obvious whether that’s daily or weekly — we confirmed directly against the official page that it’s 10 slow credits per week, a detail easy to misread as a daily allowance given how other AI tools structure free tiers.
Second, the Pro plan’s exact credit count. Various sources had listed Pro anywhere between 3,000 and 3,500 priority credits a month — a meaningful spread if you’re deciding whether to pay US$60/month. Direct verification against the official page confirms the number is 3,500, not a range.
We also caught and corrected an error on our own earlier data: Ideogram’s Team plan annual per-seat price (US$20/month) had been mistakenly recorded as if it were the monthly billing price, which would have understated the actual US$30/month cost for anyone billed monthly. That’s now fixed in the numbers above.
☀️ AMO, the budget-minded cat

AMO’s question is always the same: is free enough, or is paying actually worth it? For Ideogram, the honest answer depends entirely on how much text-heavy design work you do and how fast. Ten slow credits a week is genuinely usable for casual, occasional projects — a weekend poster, a one-off meme, testing whether Ideogram’s text rendering works for your use case before committing money. Stretched across the cheapest model modes, that can mean dozens of images a month without spending a cent.
But AMO wouldn’t recommend staying free if you need privacy. Every free-tier image is public by default, which rules out client work or anything under NDA. AMO also flags the queue: one image at a time, with wait times tied to how busy Ideogram’s servers are, is fine for patient hobbyists but frustrating for anyone on a deadline. If you hit that wall more than once or twice a month, the US$20/month Plus plan (or roughly US$15/month paid annually) buys private generation and unlimited slow credits as a backstop — that’s the threshold AMO would actually pay to cross, rather than jumping straight to the US$60/month Pro tier on day one.
Verdict: who should use it, who should skip it
Stick with free if you make images occasionally, don’t mind public output, and can live with a one-image-at-a-time queue that resets weekly rather than daily. Upgrade to Plus (US$20/month, ~US$15/month annual) once you need private generation, want to batch 8 images at a time, or keep hitting the weekly free cap. Go straight to Pro (US$60/month, ~US$42/month annual) only if you’re producing at genuinely high volume and know 1,000 Plus credits won’t last your month. Teams should compare Team’s US$20/user/month annual rate against stacking individual Plus plans before assuming Team is automatically cheaper — it depends on how many people actually need more than a shared pool of credits.
