LALAL.AI splits a song into separate tracks — vocals on one side, instruments on the other, and from there drums, bass, piano and more. That process is called stem separation, and the free tier is the first thing most people reach for. What the plan name does not tell you: the free Starter tier is a listening booth. You can run a track through it and hear the result. You cannot keep what comes out.

That one restriction decides whether the free tier is useful to you or ten wasted minutes. This guide walks a first-timer through what the free tier really does, how to get a clean result on the first try, and the exact point where you have to pay.

What the free Starter tier actually does

The free plan is called Starter. It gives you 10 minutes of processing length — that is 10 minutes of audio total that you can run through the tool, not a time limit on a session. Each file has to be 200 MB or smaller. Everything runs on the Relaxed Queue, which is the slow lane: your job waits behind paying users, so a track can take a while to come back.

Then the wall. Starter is preview only. After separation you can play the vocal track and the instrumental track in the browser to check the quality. There is no download button. The files never leave the site.

So the free tier answers exactly one question: does LALAL.AI separate this track well enough for what I need? That is worth real money, because AI stem separation quality swings a lot from song to song. A dense rock mix and a sparse acoustic recording can come out very differently. Ten minutes is enough to test two or three tracks before you commit a cent — as long as you understand you are testing, not producing.

A first run, step by step

The whole free-tier loop, step by step:

  1. Go to lalal.ai and upload a file — drag it onto the page, or pick it from your drive. Keep it under 200 MB. A normal MP3 of a single song sits far under that; the cap mostly bites on long DJ mixes or lossless WAV files.
  2. Choose what you want to pull out — the vocals, or a specific instrument such as drums or bass.
  3. Wait. On the free Relaxed Queue this is the slow part, so do not assume a long wait means it has failed.
  4. Preview both the extracted track and the leftover track in the browser, and listen for artefacts — the watery, smeared sound that stem separation sometimes leaves behind.

Common blockers, and what to do about them:

  • “Where is my download?” There is not one on the free tier. This is the single most common surprise, and the reason the Chinese edition of this piece led with it. Preview is all you get until you upgrade. Nothing you do in the free account changes that.
  • “I used up my minutes after two songs.” The free allowance is 10 minutes of audio, and a single four-minute song eats nearly half of it. Pick your test tracks on purpose — ideally the hardest ones you own, since those are what will decide whether paying is worth it.
  • “My file was rejected.” It is almost always the 200 MB cap. Trim the track or export it as a smaller MP3 and try again.

When the free tier stops being enough

The moment you need the actual files, you are on a paid plan. There are two, both billed as a subscription — a recurring charge you keep paying to keep the features.

Lite is US$9.99 a month billed monthly. Pay for a year up front and the site works it out to US$7.5 a month, US$90 for the year. Lite is the plan that unlocks download — full separated files, not just preview — which for most people is the only reason they are here. It also raises the single-file cap to 2 GB, adds batch processing (sending several files through in one go instead of one at a time), and gives you unlimited processing time on the Relaxed Queue plus 90 minutes a month on the Fast Queue, the priority lane that skips the wait.

Pro is US$19.99 a month billed monthly. The site was running a Halloween promotion when we checked: US$10.5 a month for the first year on annual billing, against a standard annual price of US$180, which it labels US$15 a month. Pro keeps the unlimited Relaxed Queue, raises the Fast Queue to 250 minutes a month, and adds three things aimed at people who do this for a living: VST plugin support (so the tool runs inside music software such as a DAW instead of the website), Lyra local offline processing (the separation runs on your own machine, not their servers), and API access (a way for your own programs to send jobs automatically).

Read one thing twice. “Unlimited” on the paid plans means the slow Relaxed Queue. The fast lane is still metered — 90 minutes on Lite, 250 on Pro. If you have a stack of urgent work, those Fast Queue minutes are your real ceiling, not the word “unlimited” on the plan card.

Prices vary by country; we checked from Taiwan.

🔍 AMPM exclusive check

Honesty first: this is a first-pass check. We read the official site once, on 2026-10-22, and have not yet run it through our usual three-way manual cross-check, so treat the quotas and commercial terms as provisional against the live site. With that caveat, nothing we found differed from the official pricing page. Every number above matches it.

What we want to put plainly is the thing the plan layout soft-pedals: the free Starter tier does not download. The vendor page does state this, but it sits under the “10 minutes” headline where it is easy to miss, and it is the first thing that stops beginners cold. If your goal is to keep a file, the free tier cannot do it at any length — more free minutes would not help you.

The second easy-to-miss point is the one above: “unlimited” on Lite and Pro applies only to the slow Relaxed Queue, while the Fast Queue stays capped. Those two facts, read as a pair, explain most of the confusion people have with this tool.

Verdict: who should use it, who should skip it

Use the free tier to test quality before paying. That is the honest purpose of Starter, and ten minutes is enough to judge whether the separation is clean on the kind of music you actually work with. Just go in knowing you are auditioning the tool, not making anything you can take home.

Go to Lite (US$9.99/month) the moment you need the files themselves, which for most people is straight away. It is the cheapest door to downloads, batch uploads and the 2 GB cap, and it covers casual and hobby use comfortably.

Go to Pro (US$19.99/month) only if you need the professional extras — the VST plugin inside your DAW, offline processing with Lyra, API access, or the larger 250-minute fast lane. If none of those read as things you need, you do not need them, and Lite is the smarter buy.

Skip LALAL.AI if you came expecting a free tool that hands you finished stems. This one does not. The free tier is a preview, and every download sits behind a subscription — so decide based on the paid plans, and use the free tier only to check the quality is there before you pay.

AMO

AMPM is a Taiwan-based AI-tool pricing watchdog. Our motto: ask before you subscribe. Two cats argue every tool from two sides:

  • ☀️ AMO — the budget-minded cat. Always asks: is the free tier enough, and is paying actually worth it?
  • 🌙 PIMI — the performance-minded cat. Cares about whether it works well, fast, and gets your job done.
PIMI

When they are done arguing, you know whether to pay. Every number is checked by us, with the verification date at the end.
