Leonardo AI is an image generator with a game-art flavour and one of the more generous free tiers in the category. The catch is timing. You get 150 Fast Tokens every day, they expire after 24 hours, and nothing rolls over. Skip a day and that day’s allowance is gone for good. This guide gets a first-time user from sign-up to a working routine that spends those tokens on purpose instead of by accident.

A quick word on the jargon before we start. Tokens are credits: a balance that goes down every time you generate something. Fast Tokens are the ones that regenerate on a schedule. A seat is one paid login for one person. All prices below were checked against leonardo.ai on 2026-09-12.

Step 1: sign up, find the counter, set one rule

Go to leonardo.ai and create an account. Once you are in, locate your token balance in the interface. It should read 150 on a fresh day. That number is the only thing you need to watch for the first week.

The one rule: every generation costs tokens, so check the cost the app shows before you confirm a job. A single standard image uses only a small number of tokens, and AMPM’s checks put the free daily budget at roughly 15 to 30 images depending on settings. That range is wide because larger sizes, higher quality settings and extra steps all pull more from the pool.

The free account runs one generation at a time. If you fire off a second job while the first is running, it waits. The separate Blueprints feature has its own limits on free: 1 running at once, 5 in the queue.

Step 2: a daily routine that fits inside 150 tokens

Start each session with the cheapest possible settings. Generate one image, not a batch. Keep the default size. Use a plain text prompt and see what comes back. Only when the composition is right should you spend tokens on a larger or higher-quality version.

Treat the 150 tokens as a daily sketchbook, not a monthly bank. Since they reset every day and cannot be carried forward, the worst outcome is going to bed with 140 unspent. The best outcome is a handful of deliberate tests every day. If you have a project, split it across days: character studies on Monday, backgrounds on Tuesday, and so on.

Commercial use is allowed on the free tier. Read the licence, though. Leonardo keeps the right to use, reproduce, modify and distribute the images you generate. What you receive is a non-exclusive, royalty-free commercial licence. That is fine for a hobby project or a mood board. It is worth pausing over if you are producing a client’s key art.

Step 3: common blockers and what to do about them

“My tokens are gone and I only made a few images.” You probably generated in batches or at a large size. Drop to one image per job and default dimensions. The cost preview will confirm the difference.

“Yesterday’s tokens didn’t add to today’s.” They never will. Free tokens expire every 24 hours with no rollover. Rollover exists only on paid plans, where a Token Bank holds unused tokens up to a cap.

“My second job is stuck.” The free tier allows exactly 1 concurrent generation. Wait for the first to finish, or cancel it.

“I need more than one run at a time.” That is a paid feature. Essential lifts the limit to 2 concurrent generations with a queue of 5. Premium goes to 3 and 10. Ultimate goes to 6 and 20.

“I want video.” The models listed for Premium are image models: Lucid Origin, Lucid Realism, Phoenix 1.0, Phoenix 0.9, FLUX Dev and FLUX Schnell. Motion 1.0, Motion 2.0 and Motion 2.0 Fast, the video models, appear on Ultimate.

☀️ AMO, the budget-minded cat

The free tier is enough for a beginner, full stop. 150 tokens a day works out to somewhere between 15 and 30 standard images, and a person learning the tool does not need more than that. The daily reset is actually a feature for a cautious spender. There is no way to blow a month’s allowance in one evening, because there is no month. You get a fresh 150 tomorrow whatever you did today.

When does paying make sense? Only when the reset rhythm starts to fight your work. Essential costs US$12 a month, or about US$9.60 a month on an annual plan, which the data lists as roughly a 20 per cent discount. For that you get 8,500 Fast Tokens a month and a Token Bank that lets unused tokens accumulate up to 25,500. That bank is the real purchase. It converts “use it or lose it” into “save it for the weekend.”

Premium at US$30 a month (US$24 a month annual) brings 25,000 Fast Tokens and a 75,000 bank, plus unlimited relaxed image generation, a slower lane you can use without limit. Ultimate at US$60 a month (US$48 annual) brings 60,000 tokens and a 180,000 bank. For a solo beginner, both are overkill. Stay free, learn the settings, and buy Essential only if you find yourself wishing yesterday’s tokens were still there.

🌙 PIMI, the performance-minded cat

Does the free tier actually let you get work done? Yes, but slowly, and the bottleneck is not tokens. It is the 1-job-at-a-time limit. Iterating on a character design means generate, wait, adjust, generate, wait. With 150 tokens you have the budget for a proper session of 15 to 30 images, but the serial queue turns that into a long one.

Essential doubles throughput to 2 concurrent generations with a 5-deep queue. That alone changes the feel of the tool. Premium moves to 3 concurrent and a queue of 10, and adds unlimited relaxed image generation with its own queue of 5, which is what you want for bulk variations where speed does not matter. The Premium model list, with Phoenix 1.0, Lucid Realism and FLUX Dev, covers the styles most game-art users are after.

Ultimate is the plan for anyone who needs video. It is the only tier in the verified data that lists Motion 1.0, Motion 2.0 and Motion 2.0 Fast, and it adds unlimited relaxed video generation with a queue of 20 alongside 6 concurrent fast generations. At 60,000 Fast Tokens a month, it is sized for daily production, not experiments.

Teams should look at Team Starter: from US$72 a month, which is US$24 per seat with a minimum of 3 seats. That buys 75,000 shared tokens, a 225,000 bank, and a further 25,000 Fast Tokens per seat. A Growth plan at US$144 a month has been mentioned by third parties, but AMPM could not confirm it on Leonardo’s own site, so it is not counted here.

Verdict: who should use it, who should skip it

Use the free tier if you are learning image generation, building mood boards, or making a few assets a day for a personal project. 150 tokens daily is a real allowance, not a teaser, and commercial use is permitted. Build the habit of spending it every day, because it will not wait for you.

Move to Essential at US$12 a month once the daily expiry starts costing you work, mainly for the 25,500-token bank and the second concurrent job. Move to Premium at US$30 if you iterate heavily and want the unlimited relaxed lane. Choose Ultimate at US$60 only if you need the Motion video models. Teams of 3 or more should price Team Starter at US$72 a month before stacking individual plans.

Skip it if you need exclusive rights to your output. Leonardo’s licence keeps the right to reuse and distribute what you generate, and no plan in the verified data changes that.
