Lovable is a chat-based app builder: you describe what you want and it generates a working app, with a live preview you can keep adjusting. Its free tier pricing sounds simple on the surface — 5 credits a day — but “credits” here don’t map to a fixed number of prompts, and that’s the detail most people miss before they hit a wall mid-project. We read the official pricing page and the docs site line by line to see what the free tier really gives you, and where the fine print and the marketing copy don’t quite line up.

Credits aren’t prompts — and that changes everything

Here’s the part Lovable’s pricing page doesn’t headline: a “build credit” isn’t one command, it’s a variable charge based on how complex the task is. The vendor’s own examples show the range. Changing a button to gray costs 0.50 credits. Removing a footer costs 0.90. Adding a full login and signup flow costs 1.20. Generating a landing page with an image costs 1.70. That’s all inside “Default mode,” where Lovable decides the cost per task. There’s also a “Plan mode” where every message costs a flat 1 credit regardless of complexity.

Do the math on the free tier’s daily 5 credits, and the number of things you can actually ask for swings wildly. On a day of small tweaks (gray buttons, footer removals), 5 credits could cover eight or nine small edits. On a day where you’re adding login screens and landing pages, the same 5 credits might only get you three or four moves before you’re locked out until tomorrow. There’s no way to predict it in advance — you find out after you’ve spent the credit.

Three separate credit pools, each with its own expiry

The free tier isn’t just one number. It’s three:

  • 5 build credits per day, capped at 30 per month. These don’t roll over — unused daily credits disappear at midnight UTC, and once you hit 30 for the month, that’s it until the reset.
  • 20 Cloud credits per month, used for hosting and deploying the app you build.
  • 4 credits per month for in-app AI features (not building — using AI functionality inside the app itself).

None of these pools talk to each other. Running out of build credits for the day doesn’t touch your Cloud credits, and vice versa. If you’re trying to budget a free month of building, the real constraint is the 30-credit monthly ceiling on builds, not the daily 5 — most users will hit the monthly wall before the daily one resets enough times to matter.

What you keep even on the free plan

Lovable doesn’t gate collaboration behind a paywall the way a lot of tools do. The free tier includes unlimited workspace collaborators, five free subdomains on lovable.app, and community support. Projects stay private to your workspace. Per Lovable’s own FAQ, you own the code and everything the AI generates — there’s no stated commercial-use restriction on the free tier, so a free-tier app isn’t legally stuck as a toy.

🔍 AMPM exclusive check

We cross-checked the credit numbers against two independent Lovable sources — the pricing page FAQ and the separate docs.lovable.dev documentation — and they matched exactly: 5 daily build credits, 30 monthly cap, 20 monthly Cloud credits, 4 monthly AI-feature credits. Nothing differed between the two official sources.

Where our check adds something the pricing page doesn’t say outright: Lovable never publishes a simple “credits per app” conversion, even for paid plans. The official line for a 100-credit Pro plan is that it covers roughly 50 to 200 build messages — a 4x range — depending on task complexity, and the company does not say how many full applications that typically builds. Anyone comparing Lovable’s price per “app” against a competitor’s flat per-message rate is working from an estimate Lovable itself won’t commit to.

One more gap: Lovable’s FAQ mentions a student discount through lovable.dev/students for anyone with a valid student email, but doesn’t post the discount percentage on the main pricing page, and we did not independently verify the discounted price on the students page itself. Anyone eligible should check that page directly rather than assume a number.

For strictly testing an idea, the free tier is usable but tight. 30 build credits a month, spent at the vendor’s own stated rates, works out to somewhere between 17 cheap edits (at 1.70 each) and 60 cheap edits (at 0.50 each) — in practice you’ll land somewhere in the middle because real projects mix small tweaks with bigger builds. That’s enough to rough out one small prototype, not enough to iterate on something daily for a month.

The jump to paid is steep in relative terms: the cheapest Pro plan is US$25/month for 100 credits, or US$250/year, which works out to about US$21/month if paid annually. That’s more than triple the monthly credit allowance of the free tier for 3.3x the price — roughly proportional, so you’re not getting a bulk discount at the entry Pro tier, just more room. The 200-credit Pro tier at US$50/month (US$500/year, about US$42/month annually) and the 400-credit tier at US$100/month (US$1,000/year, about US$84/month annually) scale the same way — each step doubles the price and doubles the credits, with the annual option shaving roughly 15-16% off the effective monthly rate across all three.

My take: don’t pay until the free tier’s unpredictability itself becomes the cost. If you’re burning credits fast because every task you need happens to land at the expensive end (logins, image-heavy pages), that’s the real signal to upgrade — not a fixed day count. And because annual billing credits “roll over more” per the vendor’s own note, committing annually only makes sense once you know your monthly usage pattern, not before.

The free tier’s real limitation isn’t speed, it’s throughput — you simply run out of daily build attempts before you run out of ideas. For someone iterating seriously on a real app, 5 credits a day with no rollover is a hard ceiling that resets you to zero functionality-testing every 24 hours.

What’s genuinely good: unlimited collaborators on every tier, including free. If you’re pair-building with a team, Lovable doesn’t make you pay per seat just to add people to the workspace — that’s not common in this category and it’s worth crediting directly. The “Plan mode” option is also useful for anyone who wants predictable costs per message (flat 1 credit) instead of the variable Default mode pricing, which matters if you’re trying to forecast burn rate rather than get surprised by it.

The ceiling on real work shows up fast once you’re past prototyping. The 100-credit Pro tier only buys 50 to 200 messages depending on complexity — if your projects lean toward the expensive end (auth flows, image-heavy builds), you’re closer to 50 messages a month, which isn’t much for active development. Business tier at US$50/month adds RBAC (role-based access control, i.e., permission tiers for team members), SSO (single sign-on, letting a team log in through their existing company identity provider), and priority support — useful for teams, irrelevant for a solo builder chasing raw credit volume.

Enterprise has no published price; it’s quote-based and scoped to usage, so it’s not comparable here at all.

Verdict: who should use it, who should skip it

Use the free tier if you’re testing a single app idea and can live with credits that vanish daily and cap at 30 a month — the unlimited collaborators and five free subdomains make it genuinely workable for a short, low-stakes prototype. Skip it, and go straight to the 100-credit Pro tier at US$25/month, if you’re building anything you’ll iterate on daily; the free tier’s unpredictable per-task cost will stall you before the month is out. Teams needing SSO or RBAC should look at Business at US$50/month rather than stacking Pro seats. Nobody should assume a fixed “credits per app” number — Lovable itself only commits to a 50-to-200-message range per 100 credits, and that range is wide enough to blow a budget estimate either way.
