[Pitfalls] Midjourney Pricing in 2026: No Free Tier, and Basic Buys Just 200 Images a Month

🐾 Key numbers
  • Free tier: None
  • Cheapest paid plan: US$10/mo and up
  • Free quota: No free plan (trial has been cancelled)
  • Last checked: 2026-10-07

Article last updated: 2026-10-08

Midjourney stopped offering a free trial back in March 2023. If you’re reading this hoping to generate a few images at no cost, stop — there is no free plan left, full stop. Every account starts at a minimum of US$10 a month. This piece is a pricing check: what each paid tier actually gives you, where the quota traps sit, and whether the entry-level plan is enough before you commit a card number.

That US$10 buys you the “Basic” plan, the cheapest of four tiers. Above it sit Standard at US$30 a month, Pro at US$60, and Mega at US$120. All four plans unlock the same model lineup — Midjourney doesn’t gate its newest image models behind the pricier tiers. What changes between tiers is how much you can generate, how fast, and whether your work stays private. That’s where most of the confusion — and the pitfalls — live.

The quota isn’t counted in “images,” it’s counted in GPU minutes

Midjourney’s billing unit is “fast GPU hours” — rendering time on fast servers, not a number of pictures. A single static image eats roughly 1 minute of that time; a batch of HD video eats roughly 26 minutes. That difference matters because video burns through a monthly allowance more than 25 times faster than a still image, and the vendor doesn’t put that comparison on the plan comparison page — you only find it once you start generating and watch the clock.

Translated into something you can actually plan around: Basic’s 3.3 fast hours a month work out to roughly 200 static images. That’s the whole allowance for the cheapest plan — once it’s gone, Basic has no fallback. There’s no slower free mode to fall back on; you either wait for next month’s reset or buy extra hours. Standard jumps to 15 fast hours a month, and Pro to 30. If you’re someone who generates video batches rather than stills, the same dollar amount buys you far less than the headline hour count suggests.

“Relax mode” and “stealth mode” aren’t available on every tier

Once your fast hours run out on Standard, Pro, or Mega, you don’t just stop — you drop into Relax mode, which generates unlimited images slowly instead of fast. Basic doesn’t have this safety net at all: it’s fast hours or nothing. That’s the single biggest practical difference between the US$10 and US$30 tiers, and it’s easy to miss if you’re only comparing headline hour counts.

Pro (US$60/month) adds something else entirely: stealth mode, which keeps your generations off Midjourney’s public feed. If you’re doing client work or anything you don’t want strangers browsing, that feature — not the extra GPU hours — is the real reason to pay for Pro over Standard. Basic and Standard subscribers’ images are public by default.

Annual billing saves about 20% — but check what you’re actually locking into

All four tiers offer an annual billing option at roughly 20% off the monthly list price: Basic drops to about US$8/month, Standard to about US$24/month, Pro to about US$48/month, and Mega to about US$96/month, all billed yearly rather than monthly. None of the pricing pages we checked show an end date on that discount, so treat it as the current offer, not a guaranteed permanent rate. The trap here is the usual one with annual plans: you’re prepaying for a year of fast hours at a tier you choose today, based on a guess about how much you’ll generate for the next twelve months. If your usage drops, you’re still locked into that tier’s price until renewal.

Midjourney’s own pricing page blocks automated price-checking tools, so every number in this piece — the four monthly prices, the annual discounts, and the fast-hour quotas — comes from three secondhand trackers (fluxnote.io, eesel.ai, and felloai.com) that we cross-checked against each other, last confirmed 2026-07-30, with the figures matching a documentation page at docs.midjourney.com. We flag this because it’s unusual: most tools we check let a page load and read directly; Midjourney doesn’t, and our own automatic re-verification run on 2026-10-07 could still only confirm consistency between secondhand sources, not a direct read of the vendor’s own page.

One gap we closed this round: a fourth tier, Mega at US$120/month, was missing from our previous records. It sits above Pro with a higher generation allowance and the same roughly 20% annual discount pattern as the other three tiers — it’s not a new 2026 addition, it was simply a tier we hadn’t logged before. Beyond that, nothing differed from what the secondhand sources show: the free-trial cancellation (since March 2023), the four price points, and the fast-hour quotas all line up, checked 2026-10-07.

AMO, the budget-minded cat

AMO doesn’t do free trials here because there aren’t any — so the real question is whether the US$10 Basic plan is enough, or whether the jump to Standard is worth the extra money. Basic gives 3.3 fast GPU hours a month, which works out to about 200 static images, and nothing else: no Relax mode to fall back on once that’s spent, and no stealth mode for private work. For someone testing Midjourney casually, or making a small, predictable number of images a month, 200 images is a real number to plan against — if you stay under it, Basic covers you for US$10 a month, or about US$8 a month paid annually.

The math changes fast if you generate in bursts rather than steady drips. Standard costs US$30 a month (US$24 annually) for 15 fast hours — more than four times Basic’s allowance — plus unlimited Relax-mode generation once those hours run out. That Relax mode is the actual value, not just the extra hours: it means a heavy week never fully locks you out, it just slows you down. AMO’s take: if you’ve ever hit Basic’s 3.3-hour ceiling and had to wait out the month, the US$20 jump to Standard is buying you insurance against exactly that, not just more fast hours. If you’ve never come close to 200 images in a month, don’t pay for insurance you won’t use — stay on Basic.

Verdict: who should use it, who should skip it

Use Midjourney Basic if you generate images occasionally, don’t need your work hidden from the public feed, and can live within roughly 200 images a month without panic when the counter hits zero. Upgrade to Standard if you’ve actually run out of fast hours before — the unlimited Relax mode is the real upgrade, not the bigger number. Go to Pro only if privacy matters to your work, since stealth mode is the one feature Standard doesn’t have at any price. Skip Midjourney entirely if you were counting on a free trial or a no-cost tier to test it first — that option has been gone since 2023, and there’s no sign of it coming back. If a completely free image generator is what you actually need, that’s a different tool in a different price bracket, not a Midjourney plan.

AMPM is a Taiwan-based AI-tool pricing watchdog. Our motto: ask before you subscribe. Two cats argue every tool from two sides:

  • ☀️ AMO — the budget-minded cat. Always asks: is the free tier enough, and is paying actually worth it?
  • 🌙 PIMI — the performance-minded cat. Cares about whether it works well, fast, and gets your job done.
