Napkin AI Free Plan: How to Actually Use All 500 Weekly Credits (2026 Hands-On Guide)
Article last updated:2026-09-07
Napkin AI turns a block of text into a diagram. Its free plan is not a seven-day trial: you get 500 AI credits every week, refreshed weekly. The catch is that most first-time users paste an entire article, hit generate, and burn the whole week’s allowance in five minutes.
This guide turns the official credit rules into something you can follow. Everything below was read directly from the napkin.ai pricing page and the official help center (help.napkin.ai), last verified 2026-09-07.
1. The rule that decides everything: credits are charged per selected word
The pricing page states it in one line:
AI credits are used to generate visuals, with approximately 1 credit charged per word selected for generation.
In practice:
- 500 credits per week means roughly 500 words of generation per week
- Selecting a 300-word paragraph costs about 300 credits in one click
- Selecting a 30-word key sentence costs about 30
Napkin also notes the formula “may change in the future for more complex outputs or advanced features,” so this is the rule as verified, not a permanent guarantee.
2. What costs credits and what does not
| Action | Costs credits? | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Generating a visual from selected text (Auto Spark) | Yes, ~1 per word | Pricing page FAQ |
| Editing colors, icons, sizes, shapes | No | Help center: editing does not cost credits |
| Regenerating (reselecting text, clicking Auto Spark again) | Yes, counts as a new generation | Help center |
| Applying an Effect | 100 credits each | Help center, stated explicitly |
| Exporting PNG or PDF | No, and unlimited on Free | Pricing page plan table |
| Importing files (PPT, DOC, PDF, HTML, MD) | No, and unlimited | Pricing page plan table |
The one that catches people out is Effects at 100 credits each — one fifth of a free week’s allowance. On the free plan that is five effects a week, maximum.
3. Six ways to make 500 credits go further
These are operational suggestions derived from the official rules above, not quotes from Napkin’s documentation:
- Never paste and generate the whole article. Select only the sentences that should become a picture. Condensing a 300-word section into a 40-word summary before selecting cuts the cost of the same flowchart by roughly eight times.
- Edit first, regenerate last. Colors, icons, sizing and shapes are free to change. Only reselecting text and generating again charges you a second time. If the visual is close, fix it by hand.
- Say what you want up front so you do not have to regenerate. Napkin’s Custom Generation lets you specify the visual type (flowchart, mind map, table, timeline, comparison chart), the orientation (portrait, landscape, square) and the level of detail. Click Auto Spark, then “Customize” under the preview. Specifying once is cheaper than generating three times.
- Save Effects for the one visual you actually ship. 100 credits buys you 100 words of generation instead.
- Remember the reset is weekly, not monthly — the help center states free accounts refresh weekly while paid plans refresh monthly, and unused credits do not carry over. So do not hoard them. Conversely, a big deck can be spread across two or three weeks, effectively giving you 1,000 to 1,500 free credits.
- Check your balance in Account Settings or the Teamspace section — the help center names those two places as where the remaining balance is shown.
4. What the free plan can and cannot do
It can (per the pricing page plan table): unlimited visual editing, unlimited file import (PPT, DOC, PDF, HTML, MD), unlimited PNG and PDF export, built-in styles and fonts, standard icons.
It cannot:
- Remove the watermark. The help center is blunt about it: free users will see the “Napkin Logo” toggle in the export dialog, but it stays locked in the on position. Removing it requires Plus or Pro.
- Export PPT or SVG. Both are Plus-and-up features. The free workaround is exporting PNG and dropping it into your slides.
- Sign up on a phone or tablet. The getting-started article states account creation is desktop only.
5. What upgrading costs
Read directly from the pricing page (monthly tab) on 2026-09-07:
| Plan | Monthly list price | Credits | Main unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free Forever | US$0 | 500 per week | Unlimited editing, unlimited PNG/PDF export (watermarked) |
| Plus | US$9 per person / month | 10,000 per month | Unlimited PPT and SVG export, 3 brand styles, watermark removal |
| Pro | US$22 per person / month | 30,000 per month | Exclusive designs, unlimited custom branding, custom font upload, optional credit top-ups |
The page advertises “Save 25%” on annual billing but does not list the per-plan annual figures, so we do not estimate them. Enterprise is quote-only.
6. Two gaps worth knowing about
1. The official docs contradict each other. One help center FAQ still says you cannot manually pick a visual type and should prefix your text with a hint like Chart:. Another article documents Custom Generation, which lets you specify type and orientation directly. The most reasonable reading is that the older FAQ was not updated when the feature shipped — go with Custom Generation, and fall back to the text-prefix trick only if your account does not show the Customize option.
2. There is no Chinese interface. Per our own verification record, Napkin’s FAQ lists English, French, Spanish, Italian, Korean and Portuguese as interface languages (generated content is claimed to support 60+ languages). Also worth flagging: billing is per “word,” and the documentation says nothing about how word counting works for languages without spaces, such as Chinese or Japanese. We have no measured data on that, so we log it as unverified.
All rules and prices here were verified on 2026-09-07 against the Napkin AI pricing page and the official help center. They can change at any time; the official pages are authoritative. Our full plan and free-tier record lives on the Napkin AI tool page. For a contrasting case where the free allowance is granted only once, see Context.dev free credits are one-time only.
What Amo and Pimi think
如果你只是偶爾要幾張圖解配文章或簡報,免費版每週500點多半夠用,先別急著付錢。真要長期產出大量圖解、又在意浮水印跟匯出格式,US$9/月的Plus划算,但記得年繳實際折扣金額官網沒列清楚,切換到年繳前自己再算一次總價比較保險。這批資料才查一次,中文支援跟台灣刷卡狀況都還沒三邊驗證,先當作參考,別當定論。
