[Verified] NotebookLM's free tier allows 50 questions a day, but removing the watermark costs US$99.99 a month

NotebookLM is Google’s “feed it your documents, then ask questions” tool. You upload PDFs, web pages, YouTube videos or Google Docs, and it answers only from what you gave it. It can also turn those files into a podcast-style audio summary, which is the feature that made it famous with students and researchers.

Our angle after checking it: the free tier is more generous than most people assume, and the paid tiers are mostly about storage and volume. The one thing many users will actually want to pay for, a clean export without Google’s watermark, sits behind the most expensive tier. Here is what we verified, as of 2026-09-08.

A note on naming first. Our tracking record lists the tool under the name Gemini Notebook, but the product lives at notebooklm.google.com and nearly everyone still calls it NotebookLM. This piece uses NotebookLM.

What the free tier actually gives you

The free tier needs a Google account and nothing else. No card, no trial clock, no subscription that quietly starts later. Commercial use is allowed.

The limits we confirmed:

The number that bites first is the 50 daily queries. Notebooks and sources are hard to exhaust for a normal person. Fifty questions in a day is very possible during an exam week or a deadline sprint, and once you hit it you wait until the next day.

The audio summary works on the free tier. That surprised us, because it is the headline feature and vendors normally gate those.

Where the paid tiers land

NotebookLM has no standalone paid plan. The upgrades come bundled with Google’s AI subscriptions, and the pricing structure has shifted since we last looked.

Two corrections from our own earlier data are worth flagging. Google AI Pro used to be listed at US$20 in our records. The official subscriptions page now shows US$19.99. More significantly, Ultra used to be a single US$249.99 tier. It is now split into a 5x tier at US$99.99 and a 20x tier at US$199.99, both confirmed directly on Google’s subscriptions page.

One gotcha on the cheapest tier. There are two products called Google AI Plus. The one on the Gemini subscriptions page costs US$4.99 a month and gives 400GB of storage. The Google One plans page lists a same-named plan at US$9.99 with 2TB. They are different SKUs. If you buy Plus expecting 2TB at US$4.99, you will not get it. Ultra 20x, meanwhile, does not appear on the Google One plans page at all, only on the Gemini subscriptions page.

The watermark: the catch not on the pricing page

NotebookLM can generate infographics and slide decks from your sources. Those outputs carry a watermark. We checked the official usage table row labelled “Watermark Removal”. It reads No for Free, No for Plus, and No for Pro. Only the Ultra tiers remove it.

That means the cheapest path to a watermark-free slide deck is US$99.99 a month. Paying US$19.99 for Pro gets you ten times the daily queries and six times the sources per notebook, but the watermark stays. For someone who wants to drop a NotebookLM infographic into a client report or a lecture, that is the fact that matters most, and it is not something Google puts next to the price.

A transparency point about our own checking. Google’s official pages block automated queries, so our free-tier and plan-comparison numbers came from two second-hand sources, elephas.app and felloai.com, cross-checked against each other. The subscription prices and the watermark row were confirmed against Google’s own pages. We are telling you this because a [Verified] label should mean you know how it was verified.

☀️ AMO, the budget-minded cat

AMO’s question is always the same: is free enough, and if not, what is the cheapest fix?

For NotebookLM, free is enough for most people, and it is not close. One hundred notebooks and 50 sources per notebook is a semester of coursework or a full literature review. The audio summary, the feature people actually sign up for, costs nothing. There is no card on file and no trial that expires. AMO’s advice is to use it for a month and see if you hit a wall.

The wall you will hit is 50 queries a day. If that happens, look at what you are doing. Fifty questions usually means you are chatting instead of reading, and a bit of discipline is free. If you genuinely need more, the jump is to Google AI Pro at US$19.99 a month, which raises you to 500 queries a day. That is a lot of money for a query cap alone.

The trick AMO likes: if you already pay for Google AI Pro for Gemini itself, the NotebookLM upgrade comes bundled. You are not buying it, you already own it. Check your Google account before paying anything.

Google AI Plus at US$4.99 is the cheapest paid step, but our data shows its NotebookLM benefit as “higher limits” and 400GB of storage, without specific query or notebook numbers. Do not buy it for NotebookLM specifically until you know exactly what it raises. And the watermark? AMO says live with it. Paying US$99.99 a month to remove a logo from a slide is not a budget decision, it is a branding one.

🌙 PIMI, the performance-minded cat

PIMI does not care what it costs. PIMI cares whether it does the job, and whether it does it without getting in the way.

On the job itself, NotebookLM is strong because it is constrained. It answers from your 50 sources and not from the open internet, which makes it far less likely to make things up than a general chatbot. The audio summary is the best version of that feature on the market, and it runs on the free tier at full quality as far as we could see.

The performance limits are elsewhere. On free you cannot choose the model. Google decides which Gemini version answers you, and it can change without telling you. For anyone who needs consistent behaviour across a long project, that is a real weakness, and Pro only promises the model “upgrades with the plan”, not that you pick it.

Fifty sources per notebook is the other ceiling. Real research corpora run to hundreds of papers. Pro’s 300 sources per notebook at US$19.99 a month is the level where the tool stops forcing you to split a project into pieces. Our data also records Ultra’s per-notebook cap in the 500 to 600 range, and Ultra 5x at US$99.99 is where you get it, together with 20TB of storage and five times Pro’s throughput.

For output quality, the watermark is not cosmetic. A watermarked infographic is a draft, not a deliverable. If your workflow ends in a slide deck someone else sees, PIMI treats the US$99.99 Ultra tier as the actual entry price, not the US$19.99 one. Everything below it produces work you still have to redo elsewhere.

Verdict: who should use it, who should skip it

Use the free tier if you are a student, a solo researcher or anyone reading a bounded set of documents. The 100-notebook and 50-source limits are generous, the audio summary is included, and there is nothing to cancel later.

Pay US$19.99 for Google AI Pro if you regularly exceed 50 queries a day or need more than 50 sources in one notebook. Do this only if you are not already subscribed, because the upgrade is bundled.

Consider Ultra 5x at US$99.99 only if watermark-free infographics and slides are the point. That is the sole tier that removes it, and it is the fact the vendor page does not spell out.

Skip it if you need the model pinned, or if your work is unbounded web research rather than answering from a fixed set of files. NotebookLM is built to stay inside its sources, and that is a feature, not a limit you can buy away.
