Perplexity is an AI search engine that answers your question and shows you where the answer came from, instead of just a chat reply with no sources. AMPM read Perplexity’s own pricing page directly — not a third-party summary — to check whether the free tier, the US$20-a-month Pro plan, and the US$200-a-month Max plan are actually worth it. Short answer up front: the free tier is more generous than most AI tools on basic search, but it quietly limits the one feature most people actually want. Whether paying is worth it depends entirely on how many deep searches you run per day.

What free actually gives you

Perplexity’s free plan lets you run unlimited basic searches. That part is real and unrestricted. The catch is “Pro search” — the deeper, more thorough version of a search — which the free plan limits to about 3 times a day. Deep Research, Perplexity’s more exhaustive research mode, is capped at about 5 times a day on free. You also can’t pick which AI model answers your question on the free tier; the system assigns it automatically (Sonar, Perplexity’s own search model), with no access to models like GPT-4o or Claude.

That 3-a-day Pro search cap is the detail most people miss. “Unlimited search” sounds like the whole product is free. It isn’t — the basic tier is unlimited, but the feature that makes Perplexity worth using for real research runs out fast. The free plan resets daily, requires a registered account, allows commercial use, and doesn’t add a watermark to anything you export.

Pro at US$20: the real jump from free

Pro costs US$20 a month, billed monthly. Pay yearly instead and it’s US$200 a year — Perplexity’s own pricing breakdown works that out to roughly US$16.67–US$17 a month, a real discount for committing upfront. For that price, Pro search jumps from 3 a day to 300-plus a day, which functions as effectively unlimited for daily use. Pro also lets you choose your model — GPT-4o, Claude, or others — instead of Perplexity picking for you, and adds file upload analysis and an image-generation feature. It does not include Max’s top-tier quota, early access to new features, or priority support.

There’s also an Education Pro plan at US$10 a month for verified students, and separate Enterprise plans billed per seat (a seat is one paid user license on a team account): Enterprise Pro at US$40 per seat per month, with a roughly US$30 per-seat discount for education and nonprofit organizations. Both of those numbers come from third-party sources, not a direct read of Perplexity’s own page, so treat them as likely-accurate rather than officially confirmed.

Max at US$200: who actually needs it

Max is US$200 a month, or US$2,000 a year (around US$167 a month by Perplexity’s own math), and it’s sold on the web only. It gives top-tier access across all available models, the highest file and app output limits Perplexity offers, early access to new features, and priority support. There’s also an Enterprise Max tier at US$325 per seat per month, or US$3,250 a year per seat, aimed at companies rather than individuals.

Max costs ten times what Pro costs. Perplexity’s own plan comparison is blunt about this: unless you’re producing a large volume of research output every day, Pro covers what most people need. Max is built for people whose job is research output at volume — not for someone who just wants more than 3 Pro searches a day.

🔍 AMPM exclusive check

Perplexity’s pricing page blocks automated scraping tools, so a lot of secondhand pricing roundups online are working from cached or outdated screenshots rather than a live read of the page. AMPM instead did a direct proxy read of the official site on 2026-07-26, and confirmed a promo banner on the Pro plan page offering an extra US$40 in free “Computer” credits — a feature-specific usage allowance for Perplexity’s browser-agent tool — with no expiration date shown anywhere on the page.

On 2026-08-08, AMPM re-checked the Max plan page twice with caching disabled, specifically to rule out a stale promo banner. That check turned up something our own earlier notes had gotten wrong: the Max page shows two different credit numbers at once — a “LIMITED TIME” banner offering US$450 in free Computer credits, and a separate line, built into the plan itself, listing 35,000 bonus credits. Our previous record had assumed these were two labels for the same number and dropped the US$450 figure as a duplicate. They are not the same thing — both appear on the page simultaneously, not as alternatives. We’re correcting that here. As with Pro, no end date is listed for the Max promo either, so neither discount should be assumed to be permanent.

Separately, the US$325-per-seat Enterprise Max price is backed by an official Perplexity Help Center article, but a direct fetch of that page still returns a 403 error (access blocked) on our end. So that number is officially sourced, just not independently re-loadable live. The Education Pro (US$10/month) and Enterprise Pro (US$40/seat/month) figures, by contrast, come only from third-party pricing trackers — Perplexity’s own pages don’t spell either of them out directly, which is worth knowing before a team budgets around them.

☀️ AMO, the budget-minded cat

AMO, the budget-minded cat

Here’s my read: free is fine if you’re a light user. Unlimited basic search covers plenty of everyday questions, and most people don’t hit a wall until they need Pro search more than 3 times in a day — which, honestly, happens faster than people expect once they start relying on an AI search engine for actual work. Once you’re past that, US$20 a month for 300-plus Pro searches a day and the ability to pick GPT-4o or Claude instead of Perplexity’s assigned model is a real upgrade, not a marketing one. Paying US$200 a year instead of US$20 a month saves you money if you’re committing long-term — Perplexity’s own numbers put that at roughly US$16.67–US$17 a month.

What I wouldn’t do is pay for Max on impulse because of the credit promos. A US$450 “limited time” credit bundle and a built-in 35,000-credit allowance sound generous, but there’s no listed end date, which means the terms could change without warning, and US$200 a month is ten times the Pro price for most people who will never use the extra headroom. If you’re a student, the US$10-a-month Education Pro plan is the better budget move — just know that price isn’t confirmed on Perplexity’s own site, so verify your eligibility and the current rate before you commit.

🌙 PIMI, the performance-minded cat

PIMI, the performance-minded cat

The free tier is a demo, not a tool. Three Pro searches a day and no model choice means you’re stuck with whatever Perplexity’s Sonar system decides is good enough — fine for a quick fact-check, not for real work. Pro changes that meaningfully: 300-plus Pro searches a day is functionally unlimited for daily use, and being able to route a question to GPT-4o or Claude instead of a locked-in model is the actual performance upgrade here, not just a quota bump. File upload analysis and image generation round it out for people doing mixed research-and-output work.

Max is where I’d pump the brakes. “Highest access to all models” and “extremely high output caps” sound great, but Perplexity’s own comparison admits most people don’t need it — it’s built for people generating research output in volume, with early access and priority support as the extra perks. At ten times the Pro price, that’s a narrow use case. For teams, Enterprise Pro (US$40/seat/month) and Enterprise Max (US$325/seat/month, US$3,250/year) add team billing and management on top of the same model access — Enterprise Max is the one actually backed by an official Perplexity document, so it’s the safer number to budget against for a company plan.

Verdict: who should use it, who should skip it

Stick with free if you ask Perplexity a handful of real questions a day and don’t mind the Sonar-only model. Move to Pro at US$20 a month the moment you’re hitting that 3-Pro-search ceiling regularly — it’s the plan that actually changes what you can do, not just how much of it. Paying the US$200-a-year rate makes sense if you know you’ll stick with it. Skip Max unless you’re generating research output daily at a volume that makes “highest limits” a real constraint rather than a nice-to-have — at ten times the Pro price, it’s not a casual upgrade. Teams evaluating Enterprise Pro or Enterprise Max should budget around the Enterprise Max number first, since that’s the one with an official source behind it; treat the Enterprise Pro and Education Pro figures as good-faith estimates until Perplexity’s own site confirms them.
