Making Pictory's AI Credits Last: One Minute of AI Video Costs 96 Credits, Avatar Video Only 30

Article last updated:2026-09-07

Pictory does something most credit-based tools avoid: it publishes what the credits convert into. That lets us do something more useful — turn it into a rate card and work out which operations actually drain the balance.

Verified 2026-09-07, from figures Pictory publishes itself.

1. The published conversions

PlanAI credits/yrImagesAI videoAvatar video
Starter1,200up to 2,00012.5 min40 min
Professional12,000up to 20,000125 min400 min
Team28,800up to 48,000300 min960 min

2. The derived rate — identical on all three plans

Divide each row and the result is clean: every plan converts at exactly the same rate.

OutputCreditsCheck
1 image0.61,200÷2,000=0.6; 12,000÷20,000=0.6; 28,800÷48,000=0.6
1 minute of AI video961,200÷12.5=96; 12,000÷125=96; 28,800÷300=96
1 minute of avatar video301,200÷40=30; 12,000÷400=30; 28,800÷960=30

That consistency tells you two things:

  1. How to save credits does not depend on your plan — the rate never improves.
  2. Paying more does not make each generation cheaper, it just buys more credits. Unlike many tools, there is no volume discount hidden in the higher tiers.

3. The finding that matters: AI video costs 3.2× avatar video

96 ÷ 30 = 3.2.

For the same finished minute, generating scene footage costs 3.2× what generating a talking avatar costs.

That runs against most people’s intuition — avatars feel like the premium feature. In Pictory’s economics they are the cheap one.

So when the format is your choice:

  • Explainer or talking-head content → use avatar video and get 3.2× the runtime from the same credits.
  • Content that needs visual narrative → spend on AI video generation.

4. Four practical tactics

1. Reach for the stock library before generating.

Every plan bundles Getty Images and Storyblocks footage (5M clips on Starter, 18M on Professional and Team). Stock footage is a separate line item from AI credits — licensed material included with the plan, not generation. Any section you can tell with existing footage should not be generated.

2. Video minutes and AI credits are two independent pools.

Starter includes 2,400 video minutes a year (roughly 200 a month) but only 1,200 AI credits — 12.5 minutes of AI video. The two numbers differ by nearly 200×, which tells you the intended shape of the product: edit a lot, generate a little. Treat it as a pure AI video generator and you hit the wall in month one.

3. Images are the cheap AI output — use them.

At 0.6 credits each, Starter’s annual allowance covers 2,000 images. Generating stills and adding motion in the edit (pans, zooms, transitions) often looks close enough, at a fraction of the cost. The 96 credits for one minute of AI video buys 160 images instead.

4. Settle the script before generating.

Obvious, but it is literal money here: regenerating one minute of AI video costs 96 credits, and Starter has only 12.5 such attempts in a whole year. Professional and above add advanced AI tools and long-video summarisation, but no plan offers free regeneration.

5. When to stop saving and upgrade

Rationing stops being worthwhile if any of these are true:

  • You need more than a minute of generated AI video per month — Starter’s 12.5 minutes a year will not do it; Professional gives 125.
  • You want custom avatars or voice cloning — those are Professional features, not a credit question.
  • You are building training video and need SCORM export — that is Team.

The source conversions (credits, images, video minutes, avatar minutes) are taken from Pictory’s official pricing page, read 2026-09-07. The per-unit rates (0.6 / 96 / 30) are our own division of those published figures, not a rate card Pictory publishes — use them for planning and treat your account’s metering as authoritative. The statement that stock footage does not consume AI credits reflects Pictory listing stock library and AI credits as separate plan items; confirm in-account before relying on it.
