If you’ve opened QuillBot, pasted in a paragraph, and watched it chop off mid-sentence, you’ve found the catch. QuillBot’s free tier limits every rewrite to 125 words at a time — not per day, per single paste. Run a 500-word paragraph through it and you’ll be copying and pasting four separate times. That’s the trade-off behind the “free forever” badge, and it’s worth understanding before you decide whether the US$19.95-a-month Premium plan is worth it for your workload.
QuillBot is a bundle of AI writing tools built around one core feature: a paraphraser that rewrites sentences to sound different while keeping the meaning. Around that core sits a grammar checker, an AI detector (a tool that estimates whether text was AI-written), a “Humanizer” (rewrites AI-generated text to read more like a person wrote it), a summarizer, a plagiarism checker, an AI chat, an AI image generator, and a citation generator. It’s aimed mostly at students and office workers polishing English writing — not translation or long-form drafting.
What the free plan actually gives you
Here’s the actual breakdown, pulled straight from QuillBot’s own pricing page:
- Paraphraser: 125 words per submission, and only 2 of the 9 available modes (Standard and Fluency). No custom mode-building.
- Grammar checker: catches basic errors only — no advanced style or tone suggestions.
- AI Humanizer: 125 words per run, capped at 6 runs per day.
- Summarizer: handles up to 1,200 words per submission, basic summaries only.
- AI Detector: free, but access is described as “limited” by QuillBot itself — no specifics on what’s restricted.
- AI Chat: 20 conversations. QuillBot doesn’t state anywhere on its page whether or when this resets.
- AI image generation: 3 images per day.
- Document storage (QuillBot calls this “Flow”): 10 MB.
You don’t need an account to run text through the paraphraser, though some features and the higher quotas above do require signing up. Free use allows commercial work, and QuillBot doesn’t watermark free output — two things worth knowing if you were assuming otherwise.

Where the free plan hits a wall
The 125-word cap is the one that trips people up fastest, because it’s not obvious until you’ve already pasted your text and the tool silently ignores the rest. The fix is mechanical: break long documents into chunks under 125 words and run each one separately. Tedious for anything longer than a paragraph, but it works.

Illustration: The free version only rewrites tiny text fragments at once, leaving longer manuscripts completely stalled outside the gate.
The bigger gap is the plagiarism checker: there is no free allowance at all. Zero. It’s a paid-only feature, limited to 25,000 words per month even on Premium. If your plan is “run my essay through the free version to check for plagiarism before submitting,” that plan doesn’t exist on QuillBot’s free tier — you’d need to subscribe.
Other things missing entirely from free: the synonym slider (letting you dial a rewrite from “minimal change” to “maximum change”), custom paraphrasing modes, rewrite history, and side-by-side mode comparison. These aren’t reduced — they’re absent.
Premium pricing: three ways to pay, one price per feature set
All three Premium billing options unlock the exact same features — the only difference is how often you’re charged and what it works out to per month:
- Monthly: US$19.95/month. Most expensive option, no commitment.
- Semi-annual: billed US$79.95 every six months, which works out to US$13.33/month.
- Annual: billed US$99.95/year, working out to US$8.33/month. This is the one QuillBot labels “Most popular” on its pricing page.
As of our 2026-08-28 check, QuillBot was running a time-limited promotion — 40% off the annual plan, dropping it to US$5.00/month, advertised as ending September 6. That’s a temporary window, not the standing price, and it reverts to the regular US$8.33/month equivalent once the promo ends. If you’re pricing this out and see a number that doesn’t match what’s written here, that’s likely why.
Premium unlocks: unlimited paraphrasing across all 9 built-in modes plus unlimited custom modes, advanced grammar suggestions and tone insights, the plagiarism checker (25,000 words/month), the full AI Detector and Humanizer (including rewrite history), faster processing, the summarizer up to 6,000 words with custom summary options, 300 AI images per month, and 100 MB of document storage.
There’s also a Team Plan for organizations needing multiple seats (a “seat” is one paid user license under a shared account), with usage dashboards, centralized billing, and admin controls. QuillBot doesn’t list a price for it anywhere on the pricing page — you have to click through to “Explore Team Plan” or request a demo to get a number.
Getting started and common blockers
- Go to quillbot.com and paste text into the Paraphraser — no signup required for a quick test. If your text is longer than 125 words, it’ll cut off; the fix is to split it into shorter chunks or upgrade.
- Pick a mode. Free accounts only see Standard and Fluency. If you’re trying to find a setting called “Creative” or “Shorten” and can’t, that’s because those live behind Premium’s 9-mode set.
- Run grammar checks as you go — free catches basic mistakes, but if you’re seeing a suggestion that looks surface-level when you expected a deeper style note, that’s the free/paid line, not a bug.
- Don’t expect plagiarism results on free. If the checker isn’t doing anything, it’s not broken — it’s a paid-only feature with no free trial quota at all.
- Watch the AI Chat count. With 20 conversations and no stated reset schedule, don’t burn through them assuming they’ll refresh tomorrow — QuillBot doesn’t commit to that anywhere on its page.
- If you’re a student on a semester budget, the semi-annual plan at US$13.33/month roughly matches a semester’s length without locking into a full year.
🔍 AMPM exclusive check
Two things the official pricing page states but doesn’t flag as noteworthy, and one gap it leaves open:
First, the AI Chat quota — 20 conversations — has no reset period listed anywhere on QuillBot’s site. Most quota-based tools say “per day” or “per month” next to a number like that. QuillBot just gives the number. We checked the pricing and paraphraser pages directly and found no reset cadence stated at all, so treat those 20 as a pool, not a daily refill, until QuillBot says otherwise.
Second, the plagiarism checker’s free allowance isn’t “reduced” the way other free-tier features are — it’s completely absent, with the only numbers (25,000 words/month) appearing on the paid tier. Easy to assume from the comparison table that free gets some small amount; it doesn’t.
Third, the 40% annual discount we observed on 2026-08-28 was explicitly time-boxed to September 6 in QuillBot’s own promo text. By the time you read this, that US$5.00/month rate may no longer be live, and the page will likely show the regular US$8.33/month annual rate instead. We’re flagging the expiry date rather than quoting the promo price as if it’s standing, because it isn’t.
Verdict: who should use it, who should skip it
If you’re rewriting short passages — single paragraphs, individual sentences, quick grammar passes — the free tier is genuinely usable long-term. No watermark, commercial use allowed, basic grammar checking included. Students doing light editing on short assignments can get real value without paying anything.
If you’re working with full essays, long reports, or need plagiarism checking for coursework, free won’t get you there — the 125-word cap and the total absence of a plagiarism allowance make it a different product for that use case. For occasional heavy use (one paper, one semester), the semi-annual plan at US$13.33/month is the middle ground. For ongoing use across a full year, the annual plan at US$8.33/month (regular price) is the cheapest per-month option QuillBot lists. Skip Premium entirely if your writing tasks already fit inside 125-word chunks and you don’t need plagiarism checking — you’re already getting what you’d pay for.

AMPM is a Taiwan-based AI-tool pricing watchdog. Our motto: ask before you subscribe. Two cats argue every tool from two sides:
- ☀️ AMO — the budget-minded cat. Always asks: is the free tier enough, and is paying actually worth it?
- 🌙 PIMI — the performance-minded cat. Cares about whether it works well, fast, and gets your job done.
When they are done arguing, you know whether to pay. Every number is checked by us, with the verification date at the end.
