Saner.ai sells itself as a “thinking” note assistant built for researchers and founders — a tool that reads your documents, answers questions about them, and connects ideas across your notes. That pitch runs into one wall almost immediately. The free tier caps a single uploaded PDF at 1 MB. If your work is academic papers, you already know most of them land somewhere between 2 and 10 MB. So the exact audience Saner.ai names is also the audience most likely to hit the ceiling on day one.
This guide gets a beginner productive fast: what the free tier actually lets you do, the blocker that trips up researchers, and how the two paid tiers change the math.
What you can do on the free tier before paying anything
Sign up, and you get a workspace that is genuinely usable for light work. The free plan includes:
- 30 AI messages per month — an “AI message” is one question or instruction you send to the assistant (summarize this, find the section on X).
- 30 AI requests per month — listed separately from messages, so treat it as a second monthly ceiling, not the same counter.
- 100 notes — a note is a single document or entry in your workspace.
- 100 MB of storage — total space for everything you upload.
- A single PDF capped at 1 MB.
For a first run, this is enough to learn the interface. Try it on something small: a blog post you saved as a PDF, a short memo, your own meeting notes. Ask the assistant to pull out action items or summarize a page. You will get a feel for how it links ideas across notes, which is the part Saner.ai is actually built around.
A practical first-week plan on the free tier:
- Import 5 to 10 short notes you already have. Stay well under the 100-note cap so you can see how the AI connects them.
- Spend your 30 monthly AI messages deliberately. At roughly one a day, they go fast if you fire off trial questions.
- Upload one small PDF — under 1 MB — and ask the assistant to summarize or question it. This is the real test of whether the tool fits how you work.

The blocker researchers hit first
Here is the catch the vendor page does not frame as a warning: that 1 MB single-file limit is a hard wall for most research PDFs. A typical journal article with figures, references, and embedded images clears 2 MB easily, and dense papers run to 10 MB. You will try to upload the first paper you care about and it won’t go in.
There are workarounds, and they all cost you something:
- Compress the PDF. Tools like a PDF compressor can shrink a file under 1 MB, but heavy compression degrades figures and scanned pages — exactly the parts a researcher needs readable.
- Split the paper. You can cut a 6 MB paper into smaller chunks, but then the assistant loses the whole-document view, which defeats the point of asking it to reason across the full text.
- Strip images. A text-only export shrinks the file, but you lose charts and diagrams.
None of these are good. For casual notes and web clippings, the 1 MB cap barely matters. For the stated use case — feeding in papers — it is the single thing most likely to push you to pay.
What the paid tiers change
Two plans sit above free, both billed monthly.
Starter — US$8/month (monthly rate as shown on the pricing page). This moves your AI allowance from monthly to daily: 30 AI messages per day and 30 AI requests per day, which is a large jump for regular use. You also get 1,000 notes, 5 GB of storage, and the single-PDF cap rises to 5 MB. It adds a limited “Reasoning” mode — the assistant’s slower, more careful answering style for harder questions. The headline number for researchers is the 5 MB file cap: it covers a lot more papers, though the heaviest ones still won’t fit.
Standard — US$16/month (monthly rate as shown on the pricing page). This removes the two limits that pinch most: unlimited notes and unlimited AI messages. The single-PDF cap goes to 10 MB, which clears nearly all normal papers. You get 100 GB of storage, 100 AI requests per day, an extended Reasoning mode, and direct founder support. If your daily work is reading and questioning full-length research, this is the tier that matches the sales pitch.
The data lists no yearly price for either plan, so we can’t quote one — the figures above are the monthly rates exactly as published.
Quick way to decide which tier you need:
- Your PDFs are mostly under 5 MB and you want daily AI headroom → Starter.
- Your PDFs run 5 to 10 MB and you want notes and messages uncapped → Standard.
- You only clip short notes and web pages → stay free.

Two things the official page does not spell out plainly, which we want on the record.

Illustration: A thick research volume gets stuck trying to pass through a tiny letter slot, illustrating the strict file limit.
First, the free tier lists two separate monthly AI ceilings — 30 AI messages and 30 AI requests. The pricing copy presents them side by side without explaining how they differ, so plan for both counters to limit you, not just one. On Starter and Standard these become daily figures (30/day on Starter; unlimited messages and 100 requests/day on Standard), which is the more meaningful difference between the tiers than the price gap alone suggests.
Second, and this is the one that matters for the target user: the 1 MB free-tier PDF cap is framed nowhere as “too small for most papers.” We’re flagging it because Saner.ai markets to researchers specifically, and the real-world size of a research paper (commonly 2 to 10 MB) means the free tier can’t ingest the documents its own positioning promises. The paid caps — 5 MB on Starter, 10 MB on Standard — are the numbers to check against your own files before you pay.
A transparency note we won’t dress up: this is a first-round check. We pulled every figure above directly from Saner.ai’s site and pricing page on 2026-10-20, but we have not yet run our usual three-way manual cross-verification. Treat the free allowance and any commercial terms as “correct as of our read” and confirm against the live pricing page before you commit money. If a number here differs from what you see on the site, the site wins.
Verdict: who should use it, who should skip it
Use the free tier if you want to test how Saner.ai links ideas across notes, and your documents are small — short memos, web clippings, your own writing. It’s a fair trial for the core feature, as long as you ration the 30 monthly messages.
Go to Starter (US$8/month) if your papers mostly sit under 5 MB and the monthly AI cap on free is choking you. The shift to a daily allowance is the real upgrade here, more than the file size.
Go to Standard (US$16/month) if you are the exact user Saner.ai names — someone reading full research papers daily. Unlimited notes, unlimited AI messages, and the 10 MB file cap are what make the tool do what the marketing claims.
Skip it if your work is heavy, image-rich papers above 10 MB, or you need a yearly price to budget against — there isn’t one published, and even the top tier’s file cap has a ceiling. Test your single largest real PDF against each tier’s limit before you decide; that one number will tell you more than any feature list.

- ☀️ AMO — the budget-minded cat. Always asks: is the free tier enough, and is paying actually worth it?
- 🌙 PIMI — the performance-minded cat. Cares about whether it works well, fast, and gets your job done.
When they are done arguing, you know whether to pay. Every number is checked by us, with the verification date at the end.
