What Speechify's Free Tier Actually Gives You: 10 Robotic Voices, 1.5x Speed, 5 Files

Speechify does one thing: it reads text out loud to you. PDFs, web pages, Word documents, scanned paper — it turns them into audio you can listen to on the commute.

Unlike a lot of AI tools, its free tier is not a trial period; you can keep using it. But “can keep using it” and “usable” are different claims, and the limits are specific enough that you should know them before installing anything.

1. The three walls

Each one blocks a different kind of user:

Ten basic voices blocks anyone listening for long stretches. Speechify’s real value is its 1000+ natural voices — close enough to human narration that an hour is comfortable. Basic voices are fine for short pieces; a whole book or a long report is where the robotic edge wears you down.

The 1.5x ceiling blocks people using it to study. If you are used to podcasts at double speed, 1.5x feels slow. Premium goes to 5x, which sounds absurd until you try skimming a long document by ear.

Five stored files blocks anyone building a library. This is the hardest cap. You cannot load a semester of lecture notes or a year of reports and work through them; every new document means deleting an old one.

Also locked behind Premium: OCR scanning (photograph a page, have it read aloud) and offline downloads. Photographing a physical book to listen to it — a very common use case — is not available on the free tier.

2. Before paying, understand there are two product lines

This is what most people get wrong, and why you see wildly different prices quoted online.

Line A: Speechify Premium (the consumer reading app) — US$29/month

For “read my documents to me.” The 1000+ natural voices, 5x speed, OCR and offline downloads all live here. This is the one most people actually want.

Line B: Speechify Studio (creator tooling) — Starter US$19/month, Creator US$49/month

For video voiceover, voice cloning and AI dubbing. It is a production tool, not a reading tool. Studio’s free tier grants 600 credits but carries no commercial rights — you cannot use free-tier output commercially, which catches people out.

There is also an Audiobooks subscription (US$14.99/month, around US$9.99/month annually), which is a third thing again.

Buying the wrong one is common: people who wanted to listen to PDFs end up on Studio, and people who wanted voiceover end up on Premium. The features do not cross over.

3. Where non-English reading stands

The good news: the site offers localised interfaces, it is usable from Taiwan without restriction, and Chinese is among Premium’s 60+ languages.

The caveat, recorded in our verification log: the natural voices are strongest in English, and the selection in Chinese is thinner. If long-form reading in Chinese is your main use, sample the basic Chinese voice on the free tier first and confirm you can live with it before paying US$29.

That is the free tier’s best use: as a listening booth. Limited as it is, it answers the two questions that matter — can I stand this voice, and will I really read things this way? Paying before you can answer both is the fastest route to regret.

4. Getting the most out of the free tier

1. Use it on short documents. A long email, an article, a few-page report — five slots is enough, and the robotic voice is tolerable across fifteen minutes.
2. Treat the five slots as a weekly listening queue. Listen, delete, keep it flowing. Using it as a permanent shelf will jam it immediately.
3. Check early whether your use case is one of the locked ones. Scanning paper (OCR), listening offline with no signal, or anything faster than 1.5x — all three are out. Better to know now.

5. If what you want is something else

• Long-form listening rather than document reading: you may want an audiobook service, not text-to-speech.
• Video voiceover: that is the Studio line, and remember the free tier has no commercial rights.

• Whether the free tier has a monthly word or minute cap: the pricing page lists voice, speed and file limits, with no word cap visible. We do not assume one exists either way.
• How many natural Chinese voices there are: per-language voice counts are not published; unverified.
• Whether Taiwanese cards work at checkout: untested.
• Whether the 10 basic voices include Chinese: the site does not enumerate free-tier voices by language. Sample it yourself.
