[Review] Stable Diffusion's Free Tier Is a One-Time 1,000 Credits, and the Open-Weight License Has a Revenue Cap

Stable Diffusion gets called “free” so often that people stop reading the fine print. It isn’t wrong, exactly — the model weights really are open and really can be run for nothing. But “free” covers two different products here, and AMPM’s read of the official pricing page shows the free tier on each one is narrower than the headline suggests. This review walks through both: the open-weight model you self-host, and the hosted Brand Studio service Stability AI sells on top of it.

Two “free” tiers, not one

The first free tier is the open-source model itself. Stability AI licenses the weights under its Community License, and that license lets you use it commercially for free — but only if your annual revenue is under US$1 million. Cross that line and you need a different (paid) license. You also need your own GPU; running Stable Diffusion locally doesn’t cost a subscription fee, but it isn’t infrastructure-free either, and the data here doesn’t include a hardware price tag to cite.

The second free tier is a trial on Stability’s own hosted product, Brand Studio: 1,000 credits, one time. Credits are the unit Stability uses to meter image generations and edits. That trial doesn’t refill monthly — once the 1,000 credits are gone, the trial is over. The free trial does include real functionality: Curated Model Routing (a layer that picks the best underlying model — Stable Diffusion, Nano Banana, Seedream — for the task), end-to-end generation and editing like sketch-to-image, inpainting, and recoloring, Precision Tools such as Precision Inpainting and Product Insertion, and standard customer support.

What the paid plans actually change

Once the trial credits run out, Brand Studio has two named consumer-facing plans. Brand Studio Creator is US$19 a month for 2,000 credits, aimed at individuals who want to try the tools; it keeps the generation/editing features and Precision Tools, adds basic support, and lets you buy more credits on top. Core is US$50 a month for 5,000 credits, aimed at creative professionals, and adds nothing structurally new over Creator except more credits and support — it’s still capped at one user. Neither plan lets unused credits roll over to the next month.

Above that sits Enterprise, which is custom-quoted (no listed price) and adds things the two paid plans don’t have at all: Brand Central (brand customization), Brand ID Models (models trained on your own brand assets), Producer Mode (multi-step production workflows), SSO, white-glove support, and unlimited seats. Enterprise credit bundles are custom too, and notably expire yearly rather than monthly.

For developers who don’t want a seat-based plan at all, there’s a pay-as-you-go API: Stable Image Core costs 3 credits (US$0.03) per image, Stable Image Ultra costs 8 credits (US$0.08) per image, and 1 credit equals US$0.01. New API accounts get 25 free credits to start.

🔍 AMPM exclusive check

We tried to re-verify the Creator and Core prices directly on Stability’s own Brand Studio plans page. As of 2026-09-24, that page — stability.ai/brand-studio-plans — returns a 404. The US$19/2,000-credit and US$50/5,000-credit figures we’re citing come from our own first-hand capture of that page on 2026-08-27, before it went dark; we have no live vendor page to re-confirm them against right now, so treat those two numbers as last confirmed pre-404 rather than currently re-verifiable on Stability’s site. The developer pricing page, platform.stability.ai/pricing, is still live, and we re-confirmed the API’s per-image credit costs there directly on 2026-07-26 by proxy-reading the page, which is what replaced an earlier set of third-party numbers we’d been using. One more gap the vendor’s marketing doesn’t spell out clearly: the “open source, free” framing for the model weights sits right next to a hard revenue ceiling (under US$1 million/year) in the Community License — that’s a licensing condition, not a technical limit, and it’s easy to miss if you only skim the “it’s open source” line.

☀️ AMO, the budget-minded cat

AMO, the budget-minded cat

AMO’s question is always: is free enough, and if not, is paying worth it? Here the honest answer is “it depends which free you mean.” If you can run the model yourself and your business earns under US$1 million a year, the Community License really does let you generate images at zero software cost — that’s a genuinely good deal, better than most “freemium” image tools that throttle quality or add watermarks. But it comes with a real catch: you need your own GPU, and the data doesn’t give a dollar figure for that, so don’t assume “free” means “free end to end.”

If you’re using Stability’s hosted Brand Studio instead of self-hosting, the free tier is thin: 1,000 credits, no monthly reset, no renewal. Once it’s spent, there’s no free lane left — you’re straight into US$19/month for 2,000 credits or US$50/month for 5,000, and neither plan lets leftover credits carry into next month, so inconsistent usage months are wasted spend. For a budget-minded user, the API pay-as-you-go route (3 credits per Core image, 8 per Ultra image, 25 free credits to start) is the more forgiving option, since you’re not committing to a monthly credit allowance you might not use. AMO’s take: self-hosting is the actual free option here, not the Brand Studio trial — the trial is a sampler, not a sustainable free tier.

🌙 PIMI, the performance-minded cat

PIMI, the performance-minded cat

PIMI cares whether the tool does the job well, not just cheaply. On capability, Brand Studio’s free trial isn’t stripped down — it includes the same Curated Model Routing, end-to-end generation/editing, and Precision Tools (Precision Inpainting, Product Insertion) that the paid Creator and Core plans use. Routing across multiple models (Stable Diffusion, Nano Banana, Seedream) rather than forcing one model on every job is a real feature, not a marketing label, and it’s present even at the free tier.

Where performance-minded users will hit a wall is scale and control. Creator and Core are both single-user plans — there’s no multi-seat collaboration until Enterprise, and Enterprise is where the more production-grade features actually live: Producer Mode for multi-step workflows, Brand ID Models for brand-trained custom models, SSO, and white-glove support. If the job is “make my own brand’s assets reliably at volume with a team,” the US$19 and US$50 tiers don’t include Brand Central customization or Brand ID Models at all — those are Enterprise-only, and Enterprise pricing isn’t published, it’s quoted. For self-hosted use, performance is entirely dependent on the GPU you supply yourself — the license grants you the weights, not the hardware to run them fast. PIMI’s take: the routing and editing toolset is solid even at entry level, but anything brand-specific or team-scale is gated behind a quote, not a listed price.

Verdict: who should use it, who should skip it

Use it if: you can self-host and your business earns under US$1 million a year — the Community License gives you real commercial use for no software fee. Also use it if you’re a developer who wants to pay per image rather than commit to a monthly plan; the API’s 25 free credits and per-image credit pricing (3 credits/US$0.03 for Core, 8 credits/US$0.08 for Ultra) are straightforward and don’t expire into a wasted subscription.

Skip it, or look harder, if: you were counting on the Brand Studio free trial as an ongoing free tier — it’s 1,000 credits once, not a monthly allowance, and when it’s gone you’re into a US$19 or US$50 monthly plan with no credit rollover. Also skip the Creator/Core tier if you need brand-specific custom models, multi-seat access, or SSO — those only exist at Enterprise, where the price isn’t public. And don’t treat “open source” as “costs nothing” if your revenue is at or near US$1 million — check the Community License terms before you build on it.

🐾 Meet the cats: AMO and PIMI

AMO

AMPM is a Taiwan-based AI-tool pricing watchdog. Our motto: ask before you subscribe. Two cats argue every tool from two sides:

  • ☀️ AMO — the budget-minded cat. Always asks: is the free tier enough, and is paying actually worth it?
  • 🌙 PIMI — the performance-minded cat. Cares about whether it works well, fast, and gets your job done.
