Suno v6 Is Here: Free Users Only Get v6-mini, All Older Models Are Being Retired, and Download Caps Already Apply

Suno published “Introducing v6” on 2026-09-09, announcing a new generation of music models built with the recorded-music industry. What actually matters to you is not the adjectives about audio quality. It is three concrete things: which model your plan can reach, when the model you use today disappears, and whether you can still download your songs. Everything below comes from Suno’s own posts and from reading suno.com/pricing directly on 2026-09-09.

1. Three models at once, and your plan decides which one

The announcement splits v6 into three models with an explicit tier split:

So free users do reach the v6 generation, but only through mini. Both the precise model and the exploratory one sit behind the paywall. Suno published no benchmark, test, or third-party evaluation behind the “better than any free model” claim, so we record it as a vendor claim and do not endorse it.

2. The line to pay attention to: every older model is going away

The post states plainly that as v6 rolls out, Suno will retire its previous models and move the platform entirely onto the v6 generation.

This was pre-announced. In the 2026-08-10 post “An update to our downloads policy and Terms of Service,” Suno already said that when the new models launch, all prior models would be retired, along with two promises:

• Everything you have already made stays in your library, playable and shareable.
• Existing songs can still be used as the basis for covers and remixes.

No shutdown date has been published, and Suno has not said whether the retirement happens at once or in waves. If your workflow depends on a specific older version, now is the moment to render and export what you need — which runs straight into the next section.

3. Download caps have been live since September 3

Plenty of people came back to Suno this week because of the v6 news and found the download button refusing them. That is not a v6 change: the new download policy took effect on 2026-09-03 (announced 2026-08-10; we confirmed the pricing page already reflects it on 2026-09-09).

Beyond your allowance, Suno says additional downloads are available for purchase. The price of those extra downloads is not stated in that post, so we log it as unverified.

The same post clears up two things people get wrong:

1. The caps apply to older songs too. Every download from September 3 onward counts, including songs made before that date.
2. Commercial rights were not taken away. Suno states that any song a paying subscriber downloads is theirs to use commercially or personally.

Suno’s stated reason is preventing mass export to streaming services. Download caps are paired with audio watermarking and fingerprinting, which Suno says are used to identify Suno songs off-platform and fight fraud and abuse.

4. Why the labels are involved: the Believe and TuneCore step

The “industry partners” behind v6 are Warner Music Group, BMG, and Believe. The Believe deal was announced only a day earlier, on 2026-09-08, and Suno was unusually candid about the backstory:

Earlier this year, Believe and TuneCore said they would not distribute music made with models that did not meet their standards, including Suno’s models at the time.

The outcome: tracks made with the new industry-partner model become eligible for distribution through Believe and TuneCore — the route to Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube. The watermarking, fingerprinting, and download limits described above also apply to music distributed that way.

In plain terms: Suno is filling in the “how do I legally release this” gap, and the price of that is zero tolerance for dumping hundreds of tracks onto streaming platforms.

5. Reality check: the blog and the pricing page do not match yet

This is what suno.com/pricing actually showed when we read it on 2026-09-09, worth stating so you do not assume you were left out:

• The plan comparison table still lists the free model as “Best free model (v4.5-all)” and paid plans as v4, v4.5, v4.5+, v5, and v5.5. The string “v6” does not appear on the page at all.
• Yet the download rows on that same page already show the new policy (free: no monthly downloads; Pro: 20/month; Premier: 60/month).

Announcement shipped, page not updated. Suno’s wording is that v6 “rolls out,” and no rollout schedule or regional staging has been published, so not seeing v6 in your account today does not mean the announcement is wrong. We mark this cell unverified and will recheck it on our next sweep.

6. Three practical takeaways

1. The free tier still has no commercial rights. v6 does not change this: the pricing page still says No commercial use, and Suno’s help center goes further, stating that songs made on the free plan are owned by Suno and licensed for non-commercial use only. 2. The free “7” is a lifetime allowance, not monthly. Once it is gone it is gone — the easiest trap in the v6 era. The 50 daily generation credits still reset daily and still do not roll over. Full credit and plan breakdown: Suno free credits and pricing, verified
3. If you want your older-model work, export it now. There is no published retirement date, and downloads are capped. Budget your allowance and pull down anything you cannot afford to lose before the switch.

Whether v6 consumes credits at a different rate, and whether v6-mini changes how many songs the free tier’s 50 daily credits buy, is stated nowhere in the announcement or on the pricing page. We do not estimate; we will fill it in when Suno publishes it or when it becomes verifiable in-product.
