What a Vapi Voice Agent Really Costs per Minute (2026): US$0.05 Is Only the Platform Fee
Article last updated:2026-09-06
Vapi is infrastructure for building AI voice agents. The pricing page opens with a friendly number — US$0.05 per minute — but that is what Vapi charges, not what a call costs you.
Read from the official pricing page on 2026-09-06.
The page splits cost into two layers
Layer one — Vapi hosting (explicitly excludes model provider costs)
| Item | Build |
|---|---|
| Calls | US$0.05 / min |
| SMS / chat | US$0.005 / message |
| Concurrency | 10 lines included, US$10 per line/month after |
| Included allowance | card states “60+ minutes included” |
Layer two — model provider costs (STT, LLM, TTS)
Listed as At cost (US$0 if you bring your own API key).
So the honest formula is: per-minute cost = US$0.05 + speech-to-text + LLM + text-to-speech. Our existing record puts the all-in range at roughly US$0.13–US$0.31+ per minute, but that figure is derived from component pricing and second-hand sources — not a published Vapi number. Treat it as an order of magnitude, not a quote.
Two limits that are easy to miss
- Retention is short. Build keeps call history for 14 days and chat history for 30 days; only Scale gets custom retention. If you need audits, dispute handling or training data, plan your own export.
- Compliance is not in Build. SSO, RBAC and SOC 2 show “-” for Build and require Scale (annual contract). HIPAA and Zero Data Retention are paid add-ons on both tiers: US$2,000/month and US$1,000/month respectively.
Build or Scale
| Build | Scale | |
|---|---|---|
| Billing | usage-based | annual: fixed platform fee + committed volume |
| Per minute | US$0.05 | volume-based |
| Support | email + Discord community | dedicated account team, support SLA |
| Compliance | HIPAA / ZDR add-ons | SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI, SSO, RBAC, data residency |
| Reliability | no SLA | enterprise-grade uptime, infra SLA |
The question is whether you need “does it run” or “someone is accountable when it breaks.” Prototypes and low-volume outbound: Build. A production support line with regulatory exposure: Scale, where you are buying SLAs and compliance rather than a lower per-minute rate.
Who should not pick Vapi
- Non-developers. This is developer infrastructure, not a drag-and-drop bot builder.
- A small shop wanting one support bot. Do the maths first — from ~US$0.13/min plus your own maintenance time, a packaged product may be cheaper.
- Anyone with strict retention rules. The default is 14 days, and Zero Data Retention is a US$1,000/month add-on that belongs in the budget from day one.

What Amo and Pimi think
For developers testing a voice bot: the free 60 minutes is enough to verify quality. US$0.05/minute is reasonable for production. But add-on compliance costs for healthcare or finance scenarios are sky-high — calculate that before signing.
